Called Glacier and talked to Rich, ordered the GFS-391 kit. Arrived yesterday in two days. Installed it today, in the parking lot of our office in about two hours. Flawless install and this baby works GREAT!!! Absolutely NO problems.

Great guy to deal with.

Wish I did it before it quit, Oo. Oo. Oo.

Thats up farther, we've got about 1/2", up towards Oneida, about 3 hours from Me, there's about 6 feet or better!

Have you done anything extraordinary to extend the life of your OEM pump, such a additives, biodiesel, etc. ?

My '03 is over 100k on the original pump as well. No additives ever, but no mods on the truck either. Running a power adder is definately going to add stress to the stock pump.

Had 161xxx on my LP before it went, now has the in tank retro, will see how far this one makes it, provided I can keep a trans in the darn truck !

I just run the diesel at the pump and add Power Service everyfill and I have had no issues at all. No gelling of fuel either and I live in the Northeast.

Please give more details on the kit you purchased.

Thanks

I didn't want the pump in the tank. if/when the next one fails, I'll be up and running in ten minutes. I bought an extra pump for 100 bucks, and it, and my screwdriver and 9/16 open end wrench happily reside in my lower console.

JDinNY,

I think my lift pump just failed me today (51K on the odo). While driving down the freeway @ 65mph the truck stumbled a few times, then stalled. I was able to shift into neutral and restart. Eventually, however, the truck completely stalled. I cycled the key a few times to listen to the fuel pump, it just ticked real slow. Finally the pump returned to normal operation and I was able to get home.

I checked engine codes and found P0128 and P0628. I need to check the manual to see what these codes are... next step. Did you get any codes when your pump started to fail/failed? I've been looking at the Glacier kit too, guess it's time to order one.

I'd better get to work.

Last week it happened to me on the highway from homer to Anchorage, 5 miles up from Clam Gulch. I was doing about 60 and it was just like the engine shut off with the key. I ended up with 2 tows to get it to Anchorage and get it fixed. I had forgotten about the 100K on the engine until the dealer reminded me. They did the intank fix and it was a 100 dollar deductable repair. I had 73,313 miles when it went out. Now I have been reading all about the pump issue on TDR and hope for now it will work for a long time or forever. With the pump in the tank now it would be a bummer when I am on the Alcan in October and March to have it dump again. If I am traveling now with the in tank pump what could I carry along for an emergency fix?? The only problem still on the truck is the bent bumper from the 2nd tow operator when it did not line up on the bed of the trailer he was using and it looks as if he used a high liftjack on the bumper to lift it up to move it over. The dealer said it wasn't them as they don't move dead trucks that way. I was not impressed at all with the lack of steering when the engine quit. That was a real surprise when I could not turn the wheel.

viper700,

I considered having the in-tank pump installed under warranty, however decided against it. The thought of using a pump that puts out low pressure (around 9psi from what I've heard) isn't very comforting. Therefore, I opted to eat the cost myself before I let the dealer give me a pump that barely meets stock fueling requirements. At this point, I only have the Van Aaken 3. 1, but want to install injectors at a future date... probably after warranty elapses. Too, right now, the pump is working properly (sounds like it anyway, no fuel gauge to verify). Therefore, the dealer, despite P0628 code, will just give me a song and dance, deny the warranty claim, and charge me a hour's labor to boot.

I went round-and-round with dealer about a lift pump failure on my 2001 (had gauges installed to verify low pressure) They are required to perform a volume test, not pressure... just won't put myself through it again. I replaced the pump at my own expense then also. I just don't want something to fail when I need it the most.

My wife was with me when the pump acted up and the truck stalled. She said to spend what it takes to make the fuel system reliable... ordered the GFS-392, big line kit, and strainer today. Now, if I can just convince her I need gauges to ensure I don't have a piston meltdown, or grenade a turbo, I'll have it made! Just don't want it to happen before she's convinced.

I'll let everyone know the outcome of the kit install. Take care.
