Survey: Pronunciation of "Diesel"

Attention: TDR Forum Junkies
To the point: Click this link and check out the Front Page News story(ies) where we are tracking the introduction of the 2025 Ram HD trucks.

Thanks, TDR Staff

The new Cheby body pannels are PLASTIC!!!!

DT466 Diesel Engine

I'm starting to think I have a weird variation of a Chicago accent or something. How do people say "diesel"? I say:

- dee-zil

But almost everyone else I've met from the TDR says:

- dee-sul

Webster shows both. *shrug*

Quote a native German who corrected me "Diezul" he actually said it like "die"(as in dead) then "Zul" as in zeebra. Dont yell at me I'm just relating what I remember. #ad

My mom, who is German, also pronounces it "dye-sel". Also, she says, "Far-en-heit", and calls VWs, "fow-vays".

Kind of like "porsch" vs. "porscha", methinks.

Probably a regional thing. For example,
In Los Angeles they Park the car.
In Boston the Pahk the caa.
In New York they steal the car.

Sorry to burst your baloons, but according to my german study book from Michigan State , ie is E, ei is I. The beauty of the German language is it's phonetic spelling. It sounds like it looks. Break the words into individual letters: I is e, e is eh, s is z, l is l. Learn the alphabet pronunciation and your'e on your way to Sprachen Deutsch.

soooooooooooooo,if "s" = "z" then "die-zel" would be correct?????? #ad

You got it right there's only one way to pronounce "diesel" and that's "Cummins"

Been having this argument for years...

Most Canadians say dee zul

Most Americans say de sul

used to laugh and scoff at the dee zul people...

But guess what...

The wife works with a bunch of native Germans who say die-zul. Had to eat some humble pie for that one...

I motion that we call it a Clessie...

Any 2nd's ?

I can lip-read "Cummins" a whole lot easier than I can "Diesel", so I don't care how it's pronounced. (I pronounce it dee-sul, for the record, though my buddies might take exception to that #ad
)
'Ol Rudolf may have invented it, but it took Clessie to build it the way I like a diesel to be built.

I use to call it, "dee-sul," until I heard a cute girl talking about driving her daddy's big truck. I asked her if it was diesel, and she said, "**** right, dee-zul!" She sounded so sexy, I've been calling it dee-zul since then.

For the "nerdish" reply; every time I've read it in an encyclopedia, it's shown to be dee-zul. That being said, I pronounce it dee-sul. Makes me wonder why I read the encyclopedia if I won't believe what it says
