Torque Wrench

Mig Welder Question

I carry all of my tools plus a FIRE EXTINGUISHER. I have seen a lot of uh-ohs turn into blazing oh s***s because of not having one of these. just my . 02

Ditto on the fire extinguisher. If you have a turbo explode or drive over spilled gasoline or propane, you may need a fire extinguisher to kill the engine. I live close to Eugene and there are still lots of unburned VW Bugs and unburned Harleys to put out.

For those that only plan on carrying a credit card and cell phone... you may find yourself out of range and with no cash. Many times you may have a good Samaritan with the knowledge to fix your problem, but no tools or parts. When I stop to help someone and they have made no plans to help themselves, no tools, no spares, poorly maintained vehicle, I may not put out a full effort.

Key Items from my list:

'Truck Air' 12v air compressor ($35),

4 way lug wrench (mostly for trailers and others),

Glass Cleaner (works for hand cleaner, parts cleaner)

Fuses (My 01' has about 12 kinds)

Hi Temp RTV sealer,

Wire crimpers, crimp connectors and good 3M #33 electical tape,

Usual tools, oil, filters, belt, wire, jumpers, tire plugs (lots).

For off hyway, I just plan on camping:

Flashlight, 5 gal water, sleeping bag, shovel, wagon jack, wire, 2x12's, propane bbq, food, tow chain, snow/mud chains, u joint, extra spare (used it), CB, 12 gage pump with 00 Buck and BBs.

If you plan for a problem, you won't have a problem. Pessimists are never disappointed, they are pleased to be right and happy to be wrong.

everything stra6jeff has + artic weight overalls, wool hat, come along, rain slicks, various hoses (radiator, transmission, fuel, power steering), hose clamps, 6qts ATF, 3 gal ursa (no rotella), 3 gal antifreeze, 3 gal water, washer fluid, digitall multi-meter, gear puller, lift pump, wire, filters, recgargeable flashlight hardwired to truck, drop light with cigar plug and 12V bulb. I use the cheaper 1710 electrical tape, though (it seems to stand up better on rope ends in sun and salt water) It is amazing what can be done if you are safely out of traffic, sometimes before the tow truck arrives:)

If you carry too much stuff........

You'll have to get one of these. Unfortunately You'd probably still fall short of the one tool you desperately need.

Carry on tools

Cell phone, Credit Cards and the AAA Card.

OK, I admit that I use to carry a small box of misc tools and a spare filter and for the last 15 years those tools have been used to fix a friends Bronco with a bad trailer plug, repair a propane lantern while Elk hunting, help a fellow RVer break into his trailer, change a starter on my Brothers Blazer and fix a water leak in me own travel trailer.

Those tools could not fix the bad TPPS in the 99 Ram so I quit carrying the box and replaced with the phone/cards/leatherman tool/spare filter and a 6-pack of brewskis.

Straight6Jeff,

you can lose the jumpers and just use 2 50 ft lengths of 2/0 welding cable... you gotta have 4 vise grips in there, right? only need 2 vise grips if you have ground clamps on the leads. 50 feet gives more than enough so you can pull up single file either in front or in back to make the jump... nice for head in parking in crowded lots. Of course, you only need one wire if the other guy has a metal bumper too:) guess the short cables are good for going frame to frame. you can't carry too many tools... it is impossible. Drive long enough, you will use everything in there. I have;)

I can't believe no one has mentioned this... the service manual. On long trips,I never leave home without it(along with most of the stuff already mentioned).

bumper dumper. Slides into the reciever, 2" swuare steel with a toilet seat on it, and lid. Put a trash bag under it and take a dump. seal up the bag, and remove. I've got the optional tp holder and magazine rack. Really, I'm not kidding.

Service manual also.

Is this a comercially available item or must one fabricate it himself? There have been a few tmes such a thing would have come in handy.

I leave the 2" receiver open for my vise, so I have to use the 5 gal pail in place of the bumper dumper. I am happy with its performance, but it clearly is not as refined as your set up;) Oh, and a 3/8 alen key for the front brakes... .

After 5 years of riding with Harleys (nothing personal) I have learned that I hate sitting on the side of the road waiting for a trailer because nobody has the right tool. Now my Honda carries enough crap to do a full tear down and rebuild on the side of the road. People laugh until they have to come to me and ask in a rather humble manner “Can I borrow your tools?” Same with the Truck, just out of habit. If I break down and it can be fixed, I have the tools to do it. What is an extra 200#s any way (no joke). Makes the truck ride a little smoother. :D
