In July 2001, After doing much research I purchased a 2001 2500 H/0 Cummins Turbo Diesel.

In October of 2001(After I purchased this vehicle new) At 4,400 miles, I had to have the short block replaced by the dealer.

Knowing this, would you buy this truck? Or all other things being equal, would you buy a different truck that did not have a short block replaced at 4,400 Miles?

Has the value of my truck been decreased? Why or why not?

Thanks

How many miles on the new short block? Is there a warranty on the new short block? if so for how long? That might have been the one in a million bad short block.

I guess I don't understand what your question really is. But here is my opinion on how I interpret it. Yes, I would have no problem buying a low milage vehicle with a major repair, as long as the rest of the vehcile showed no signs of abuse. All things mechanical can break.

My truck had 511 miles and was on it's second engine when I bought it. It was sold elsewhere and lost the engine, Chrysler bought it back, replaced the assembly and sent it to the auction where a local dealer ended up with it. I currently have 10,000 on it. I saved some cash buying a "used" truck.

I don't think that I would buy the truck unless there was a HUGE price break, or an iron clad warranty on the motor. I used to own a 1985 Chevy Suburban that never got it's powertrain sorted out. Brand new engines and trannys were not impervious to the Chevy demon. We never could figure out why the damn thing fell apart. The only thing that I can imagine is that there were alignment problems somewhere in the system that people were unable to diagnose. Suffice it to say that the truck never, ever ran right for very long. Based on that experience I am really gun shy about buying vehicles that have had catastrophic failures of any kind no matter how new. Could the failure have been a one in a million problem? Absolutely. Are you willing to take a gamble without some serious backing? I'm not.

Just what I think.

Twilson - Congratulations!

What'd you pay for it? I'd have bought it - I'm sure it has the same as a new one's warranty + 4,400 miles right? Seems like it's a new truck I'll bet you got it for a song eh? Let us know, c'mon - c'mon how much.

Thats what the warranty is for. No different than windshield wiper motor or headlite switch failure.

I think what you are asking is: would I keep a truck that had an engine replaced at 4k miles. Yes, if the truck had not been generally flogged every time it was started. What was the cause of the engine failure???

My first shortblock was replaced at 10k mi. I had a VA and a 3 day old FRAM oil filter, failure was #5 &6 wrist pins due to oil starvation.

Got it back from Cummins, drove it 50 mi to check for leaks went home. Installed 4", DD1's, Gear Vendors and next day hooked up the 5th and pulled out for the great NW and DTT's shop. I have over 40k on the new short block and she has never missed a lick. 327 hp at the ground w/ tc unlocked before the turbo, EZ and 505 ecm.

If it is a good truck, keep it. The next one might wander, brake pull, low power, poor fuel mileage... ... ... ... ...

Isn't this supposed to be a thread for emergencies?

Why would you think the value is down becuase the dealer worked on it? If the dealer made some mistakes shouldn't it become evident before the warranty is up. I believe if you keep the truck and have a subsequent problem off warranty you would be granted some policy help.
