2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Suspension Question

I have a 99 2500 4X4 Sport. In the front as part of the suspension is what looks like a control arm. I want to call it a trailing arm, but I am not sure.

Both (Passenger and Driver Side) are stamped from one piece of steel into a "U" channel. The one on the passengers side appears as if the bottom has been squeezed together at aproximatly the middle of the arm. Is this normal? The drivers side arm doesn't seem to have this.

Any info would be appriciated.



If this is a damaged trailing arm, anybody make aftermarket parts that are a little tougher.

It kinda looks like someone used the lower control arm has a tie-down point at one time.



There are a few options for boxed control arms and other designs on the aftermarket.



Do a search for "control arm" or "control arms" and you'll find some info.

I'm thinking someone placed a jack under it and it kind of folded in on itself. I'd try prying it back into shape a little bit at a time and see if it's OK. It looks like it's flat on top / not bent, so if you get it time you'd probably be OK???



There are many aftermarket suspension parts out there but be prepared they're mainly for off road (4X4ing) use and that's why they're so pricey. If you do need to replace it I think a bone yard would probably be worth trying? I know DC isn't cheap, I think they were about $150 each piece when I was asking, and that's shop to shop cost!!! - MHO - Let us know what you end up doing - seriously see if it can be re-bent back though - you can't hurt something any more if it's already not right - right?

Thanks for the help guys. I figured it was bent, but I just wanted to be sure.



I just purchased the truck a couple of months ago, and found it when I was changing out the transmission. It didn't look right, but it still appears straight and does the job it was designed for.



Joe Mc, I will do as you suggested, but I will still replace it at a later date.



I still havn't decided which aftermarket ones I will go with. The Kore guys are about a half hour drive away, and their steel control arms are in the lead. If I use them, the only down side is that I just don't know if I will be able to put 35's on it then. :-laf
