As far as the engine goes, the Cummins (12V, 24V, ISBe) is designed to be run at maximum rated horsepower RPM for extended periods of time. Run 'em long, run 'em hard. Should be around 2900 rpm for the new common rail design. The biggest obstacle to running too long is high EGT (over 1300* pre-turbo), but that usually isn't a problem until you upgrade the fueling levels.
