Swap in a manual trans for an auto, can you do it??

I have a 98. 5 with an auto, has anybody converted to a manual trans?? I know there are some first gen guys that have. Our 24 valves just have all those electronics, and that was my concern. I read some older posts and found nothing. I know about the auto upgrades (DTT etc... ) but I want a manual. I would have bought a truck with one, but I could not pass up the deal I got.

I'm going through the same thing on mine! I picked up an NV5600, bellhousing , and NV241HD t-case which I'll be putting in as soon as I collect all the parts. Some say "big money" to do the swap but if you can find a donor truck with everything, it shouldn't be that much. Good luck.

I got my swap done the day after New Years I'm very happy with the results! I made NO computer or harness changes. The truck runs fine with the exception of losing the cruise control I hope to come up with a fix for that when the weather breaks a little. Let me know if you have any Q's.

No cruise?!?!? I would stay auto if I lost my cruise! But thats me, I run way to many miles to keep the foot working. Its bad enough doing it to keep the "shudder" down when I get in the hills. If I do convert it I am going to have enterprise engine do it. He said he could do it for about tha same as doing a good rebuild on an auto.

Hey Karl,

What kind of condition is your auto in? Does it need rebuilding? Any upgrades? Ive got a 98. 5 with a 5spd and a South Bend Con FE. Transmission was gone through with new bearings and synchros recently. Ive been thinking about doing the swap to auto, but Ive got a VA box and Powermax 3 and future upgrades include injectors and twins, so a stock transmission wouldnt really be sufficient for me. My truck is a club cab shortbed, I know that the easiest way to swap is to find an identical truck to do it with. Lets talk.
