So I swapped my six speed for auto. And, by and large, all is good. However when you first put the truck in gear it bucks and 'lopes' really bad. It does not self correct. A quick tap on the throttle and it goes away. Does not do it when coming to a stop.

Is this an ECM problem ? Its not bad when 'I' am driving but it freaks me out if I have to let anyone else drive it, body shop, etc. Doubt I could sell it this way either.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Apparently the manual ECM's have an anit-stall feature that does not like the load the tq converter puts on the engine. It fuels, then de-fuels, then fuels, etc. You can get an auto ECM or maybe a smarty with a custom recovery software that will flash your ecm with the auto program.

Partyat33,

This sounds so, so familiar. I've gone from a manual to an auto also. I'm now running an auto ECM and it cured the romping & bucking but opened a whole new can of worms with the cruise control. Your truck is the same year as mine and has 100% electronic (ECM) cruise control while autos have speed control servo's and involve the PCM also. I've got another recent post detailing it all. Long story short, our best bet is to get Marco to make a special program with the low idle governor of an auto (no anti-stall). I'll PM you with my phone number.

Thanks Dave, I think that is the solution. I hate to spend big $$$ to fix it though. I don't use the cruise much, maybe I can find an auto ECM in a junkyard. Any other issues with the Auto ECM you are having.

If you guys get Marco to write a special program... let me know. I will be swapping to an auto shortly and am sure to have this same problem with my 2003.

I have a friend who bought a truck that originally had a v10, but the shop switched it over to a cummins after an accident. Everything on the truck was done right, but the cruise control wouldn't work. The shop swapped out 5 ecm/pcm & it still wouldn't work. He ended up finding out that the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel had to be changed because the v10/cummins had different voltage/ohm switches. He swapped them out & cruise works great. Can you guys be seeing the same thing from a Automatic/ manual..... Just thought I'd mention it.

I would gladly offer up my auto and ALL assosiated electrics for a 6 speed swap. Then I'd P-pump it and stop worrying. Then I'd drive the 01 again.

I can get a allison from a 06' F650 for cheap, but not sure if a adapter if available from a Cat engine to Cummins.

a six speed is longer than an auto so you will have driveshaft issues. with a five speed they are about the same length as an auto. they are like five inches difference. am I wrong here Dennis?

Mark

There is a difference. If I remember I had to lengthen my rear drive shaft, but an inch or two. When you swap from a 5 speed to auto I think its the other way around. It was close enough that I did not redo my front driveshaft.

Hey Mark, do yo want to by my GLTDR hitch cover. ??

the only reason I know about the length differences is because I got a gear vendors o/d for my truck out of a truck with a six speed. the trucks had the same wheel base but I had to have the driveshaft from his made longer to fit mine. and mine was shortened to fit his. I often wish I had a manual.

how much are those covers Dennis?

Mark
