I have a 1999 Dodge 1 ton 4x4 Diesel Auto that I am swapping a motor in. I have a brand new motor that has the ecm and harness on it, it was a 02 with a stick. The 02 does not have a crank shaft postition sensor toner ring on the crank. Will the ecm off of the 02 work in place of the 99. . I have started the truck with the 99 ecm and it will run but throws a CSP code. . Does anyone know what I should do... Oo.

I "think" the 02 engine should keep the 02 ecm & work fine. The engine doesn't know what transmission is being used. The ecm doesn't control the trans... the pcm does. I would install the 02 ecm & try that, because the 02 injection pump [h. o. ], sensors are different too. Which vp44 are you using the 99 or 02?

I am using the 02 pump. . Do you think I will have to change the pcm also???

No... just the ecm only. The engine computer needs to match the engine. What codes are you getting?

Thats a problem I have the one off of the 02 but it fell over and bent the hell out of the computer. We tried to start it today and the wait to start light blinked and never went off. The fuel pump wouldnt work and the scanner wouldnt communicate the truck. . So we took the ecm from the 99 and put it in and the wait to start light did go out and the truck started. Then it come up with a CSP ensor code. And a I think it was DTC which I dont know what is. . I have another computer for the same 02 I could try. . These were brand new crate motors on there way to the dodge plant, I hope the ECM's have software in them... .

there may be a bus communication problem between the 02 ecm and the 99 pcm. all the modules are programmed with the vin number. if they dont match they wont communicate. if im wrong someone will let us know. but I am pretty sure. I have heard of using the cam sensor wired somehow to the ckp sensor. not for sure how it would work though.

I have heard that to but never talked to anyone who has done it. . Problem is I dont hve the VIN's for the donor trucks... Thanks For the Help. . Trevor

I bet Marco would know... send him a PM. I'm sure he would try to help. Now that it's mentioned... I think wtfd6 is right about the miscommunication. The truck may need to be reflashed. I'd try to get a set of matching pcm/ecm to install as a unit. They can be bought on ebay pretty cheap. I wonder if the battery were disconnected if it would reset the system. I'm no expert, but just trying to help.

We are going the change the ecm and the pcm. I will post if it works or not... Also someone mentioned a CTM module... What and where is this?? Thanks

The '99 uses a CKP (crankshaft position sensor) for the tach. Without this sensor input, there will be no charging, AC, OD, etc. Your '02 engine does not have this, and cannot be added to it. The signal sent by the '02 CMP (camshaft position sensor) is different than what the '99 sensor sends. The '02 reads a tone ring on the back of the cam, whereas the '99 just reads a couple of holes in the cam gear itself.

The tach may work if you replace the PCM to a version with the '02 software in it, but I am not sure. Never tried it.

Also, a blinking WTS light is typically an indicator of a blank ECM... It will most likely need to be flashed with the latest software by the dealer .
