I used the cody coupler on both trailers and b&w turnover on both trucks. one trailer has an extended box type 5'er pin & the other does not.

A coincidence in posting this thread today. On my way to work today at 0530 I saw a crash on the freeway I take to LA. It was a three car chain reaction crash, and the last vehicle was a new white dually that was pulling a gooseneck flat bed trailer. It looked to be about 25-30' long, not counting the part over the bed. The trailer was empty. As traffic slowed to go around, I got close to the wreck. The raised portion of the trailer was resting against the back of the truck cab, and had dented it pretty good. The front of the truck was chrushed as well. All I could figure was that the hitch somehow broke loose and the trailer rammed the cab of the truck. Scary stuff... ... .

I've been running an RV2 fifth wheel/gooseneck adaptor from Pop Up Industries pulling a 12,000 pound Jayco trailer. Zero problems. The 5th Wheel Companion from B&W does look like a good setup though. Not sure what it costs.

Re: the gooseneck trailer on the LA freeway - that's a fairly common thing when a GN is involved in a crash. It doesn't necessarily mean the GN trailer came unhitched though. Those things will swivel on the GN ball in the truck and hit the cab when the tremendous forces involved in a traffic accident are applied. As with anything - DON'T FOLLOW TOO CLOSE WHEN YOU'RE TOWING AND USE A LITTLE COMMON SENSE. I've done a lot of towing with a GN trailer (yes, even in the LA area) and never had an accident. God willing, it will continue that way.

I too looked into a fiver to GN conversion and rejected it for these same reasons. Some manufacturers do caution about pin box issues and require minimum pin box construction criteria before allowing use. Still not enough for me though.

On a related subject, has anyone used the PopUp extended GN coupler (SB1)? Looks like a good solution to short box towing for a GN.

Any comments on safety or stress issues as with the GN adapter?

I bought the SB1 and it works great for me. I had considered the B&W ball extender but went with this one because of the extra 3".
