Does anyone know a source for a switch with a built-in timer or a seperate timer circuit? I've added some accessory lights and I want to have them automatically shut-off after ~10 minutes. Otherwise, I'm going to come out of the woods one day and find a truck with a dead battery :( .

I checked with a local shop "Automotive Electric Specialists. " They have lots of electrical "stuff" and told me that no such switch or circuit is available. I can't believe that. Half the switches on a new rig have a timer on them.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

I wonder if you couldn't tap into a source that does switch itself off for your power. Don't the dome lighs go out on their own? Others?

12v Timer

Just use a line voltage spring wind timer, available at any good hardware store or Home Depot. I use one for the fuel transfer timer. You can get one from 15 minutes to 2 hours, and you don't have to use the full time, just wind it to what you need.

Will these aux. lights allways be timed? If so, then all you need is a time delay switch (sold at most electrical supply houses)-- The last one I installed was in a wood shop. They wanted their dust vacuum to come on with the table saw but wanted the dust collector to continue to run for X-amount of time after the saw was turned off to clear all the remaining saw dust from the collector tubes. Worked great

Good ideas

Guys,

Thanks for the tips. I'll be checking them all out.

Keep in mind this is 12V DC circuit so some of the AC timers might not work.

I'm planning to put a timer on my canopy dome light first. I want it to turn off after a set amount of time in case I forget it. If I still need it, I'll just turn it on again. I have some rear auxillary light that could use the same protection.

Thanks again.

I have an NTE catalog that has all sorts or timed relays, circut breakers, switches, ect. They have a web sight listed nteinc.com

They have several DC timers that are adustable. Good Luck!
