I recently (a few months ago) sold my '99 quad cab 4x4 5speed. Since the time I sold it, I have missed it quite a bit. I am considering buying a new cummins 4x4. What can I expect to be different. I was familiar with certain things about my 99 like the "53" block problems, the lift pump/injector pump issues, etc, etc... Is there anything like that... . little quirks or something about the new cummins engines or the dodge truck in general. What kind of options are "must haves". I prefer the manual transmission, has there been any problems with the 6speed? Anyone recomend the Auto? Thanks in advance guys!

I sold my '99 4X2 dually to a friend and recently drove it for 2,000 miles because my lift pump failed ... ... ... ... I don't miss anything going to an '03. That '99 wore me out trying to drive 1,000/day, it's a breeze in the '03. This is all towing and varied terrain.

I went from a 1st gen where to only good part was the Cummins itself ;) to the third gens of which I am on my fourth. All of mine have been automatics and they have performed very well, even under lots of heavy towing. The torque convertor is loose and bombing should be limited to under 100hp without some mods. I also have 3. 73 gears in all of them. The choices now are 3. 73 or 4. 10. U-joints and ball joints on 4x4s are the only little issues I can think of. The trucks are really much improved. Milage isn't near as good as your 99 but power will be a whole lot better. My '03 would get better than 22 mpg running around empty. My '05 was down to 18 doing the same stuff and the new '06 is still down around 14-15, but should come up to the '05s level. The diesel noise is almost completely gone on my '06. The '03s were quiet but the brand new ones are really quiet. The six speed was a NV5600, a legend in strength, until mid '05 I think. Now replaced with the G56 a Mercedes corporate transmission. I don't see many failures here but they are still pretty new. '06s get a new interior that I like better. Frames are much stiffer than old, brakes much larger, steering more accurate. Can you tell that I like the trucks :-laf Go drive one.
