I would trade the auto for the six speed in a heartbeat. The parts swap between two trucks sounds like the best idea. Anyone wanting to swap an auto for a 5 or a 6 speed let me know.

No slippage needed!!

Great thing this freedom of speech..... I wouldn't trade a NV 4500 with dual disc clutch for any auto made if mated to a high torque diesel. Maybe a Getrag for a pristine Allison... ... if connected to less then 300hp. ;)

Did you make the swap or are you going for it? I want to go the other way, from the 47RE auto to a 5spd or 6. My truck has 38,000miles on it, and it's a '96. I would be interested in how it came out. Thanks

Auto Trans

If someone were going to all that trouble and expense, why not go with the Allison 6 speed World Transmission. Saw a Chevy conversion with a 5. 9 and this trans several years ago in Michigan and it was wild. They towed a big race car trailer and needed a crew cab but didn't like the GM automatic.

Well, since money and logic don't seem to be a factor (trade the truck), sure, it'll adapt to a T-case. For enough $, it'll adapt to ANYTHING!!!

For what it's worth, my truck would RULE with a 6 speed!

I got a six... cyl/spd . run it to 2700, hit the clutch, get in the next gear and let it out before you hit 3000(never let off the pedal) I never drop below 2200 after the launch and I get rubber in 2-5(4 gears:D :D :D ). I never drop 'off boost' for a shift.

On the street I get about 90mph in the qtr and my truck weighs 8000#... only perf mod is a BHAF  :) ;) :p :D

maybe its the life time of video games????

the stick is harder to drive fast because it requires a little skill and a lot of hand-eye coordination.

there are no 5 sec dragsters running autos. .

Mark_Kendrick,

I've thought about driving mine the same way but I'm afraid I'd be needing a new clutch the same day. Is yours surviving?

It seems like 3rd gear starts for 6 speeds would be the way to go. Opinions? Has anyone been turning decent 1/4 times with ETHs?

Wiz1 - if you do swap to the auto and end up deciding you want 4. 10's let me know. I've been looking for someone to swap my 4. 10's with for 3. 55's for a LONG time - only problem is the only guys that want the 4. 10's are driving autos and they have the Dana 70 instead of the Dana 80 we have.

I don't get the 5th gear scratch as easily as I used to. I don't drive it hard much. the clutch is holding up fine. I've only run through the qtr a few times.

There is a stop sign leaving Caney,KS (on the state line) on hwy75N at the bottom of a . 2+ mile hill. I top it at over 80 without trouble. :D :D :D

The gears on the six are great. My 87 mustang had a five spd with wider spacing and it was fast (13. 2 sec qtr) but it had a hard time right after the shifts falling to the bottom for the 302s HP curve.

Shifts in my 8000# truck are like a kick in the pants:D

barking 4 tires is fun too:) ;) :)
