Diesel Man

I've been a Mopar fan all my life but after a year of research, I've decided to go with a new Ford Super Duty Diesel Crew Cab for my next new truck. I just ordered it yesterday. It's a fully loaded 4X4 Lariat with all the goodies including trailer brake controller. My price, $40,678.

WHY? (you ask)

Well, the main reason is simply that Ford is building the best product at this point. The new front suspension, the heavy duty 5 spd auto, the fact that the transmission has a drain plug & an external spin-on filter, the engine oil and fuel filters are mounted on top and easy to change and it's made in the USA instead of Mexico!

I still think the Cummins engine is the best of the three but what good is it to have a million mile engine in a 100K mile truck with a auto transmission that is still behind the times? I guess I just got tired of waiting for Dodge to catch up.

Don't get me wrong, I still like Dodge and I had to work hard to put aside my preconceived ideas to make an intelligent truck buying decision based only on the facts. And right now, per all of my research, Ford is making the best product.

One final note, ALL three brands are making damn good trucks and I don't think a person be disappointed whatever the choice. But after carefully weighing all the facts, Ford came out on top. I'm not posting this to offend anyone so my apologizes if anyone takes offence. I just couldn't sit by and let my brand loyalty become blind loyalty.
 
the only issue i have seen in these newer fords is the engine. if you get one that is working good [and i hope you do] you will have one nice ride. now if you could still get the 7. 3 engine, that would be a killer truck, but that 6. oh has seen so many problems it has me scared. i hope that ford has all the problems with that 6. oh figured out, and good luck with the new rig when you get it
 
Just by the way you came by your decision show that you are still a Dodge man at heart. You weight the pros and cons of the truck and selected the one best suited to what your needs are. If you have read the compaint of Ford owners on the other forum site, you can agree that they follow their brand blindly dispite the leaks, bad injector, etc. Stay in touch with TDR and let us know how well you are doing with your new purchase. I just can't tear myself away from the Cummins!!!! That Power Wagon will be awesome when they come out with a Cummins equipped model!

Good for you !! Good luck with the 6. 0 diesel motor. I have owned fords and chevys for the last 25 years plus. I have heard all the dodge HORROR stories (trannys,cheap trucks,and so on)I never even considered a Dodge product since 1977. I am sure glad I test drove my 2004 cummins. I am as happy as heck with it,14,000 carefree miles so far. This is a darn nice truck. I hope they got the bugs worked out of the 6. 0 ford diesel. Thats what turned my off on a ford diesel product. LOVIN this CUMMINS. coobie :-laf :-laf
 
If I could buy the new Ford with a Cummins engine, that's the way I would have gone too. If this 03 doesn't hold up, I may go that way yet.
 
One last comment

Before you buy your FORD do your homework!! Check the Diesel sites. Check this comment out at this site. www.rv.net go to tow vechiles section,Click on subject BEWARE,do some serious reading on this guys ford powerstroke problems. Just a little food for thought :eek: coobie
 
Echo coobie. I spent a couple hours last night reading the ford diesel page. I thought they had most of the problems worked out, but there are still a lot of unhappy campers over there.

Wishin you the best of luck with the Ford. Had one myself for 17 years. Loved it. But I had the 6. 9 litre, and this 04 Cummins I have now sure is a definate improvement. However, I never did get a chance to run a 7. 3. I did price out a 04 Ford when I was in the market, but the 6. 0 had me scared. Sure do like the looks of the Ford styling though. Please keep us posted, OK. We all want to know how it holds up for you. BTW, what kind of work do your pickups do? Do you pull anything? I would think that you would give us(we on the TDR) an unbiased opinion beings you had the courage to tell us that you were going to Ford. Again, good luck, and keep us posted.

Well, good luck to you. You might get a good one. However, take it from this former PSD owner - my '01 was the most problematic, left-me-stranded, in-the-shop vehicle I have ever owned. And it had the "reliable" 7. 3 (being sarcastic here - it wasn't. :-{} )



I had a 97 Dodge V10. Great truck. One of the reasons I came back to Dodge.

I also wish you luck with your truck and overall I think Ford makes a good truck (I have 3 now and sold two PSD's in the last 3 years), but I take exception to your contention that Ford is "simply building the best product at this point". The change in the Ford suspension now just brings them up to speed with DC and the majority of the other issues you've mentioned have to do solely with the Torqueshift vs. the 48RE. I will not argue that the torqueshift would appear to be a better transmission than the 48RE, but you've admitted that you think the Cummins is a better motor, so I guess you felt it was more important to have the better transmission than the better motor? Again, this is moot to me because I wanted a 6spd and I firmly believe the NV-5600 is better than the ZF 6 spd Ford uses, so as far as I'm concerned, I got the best engine AND transmission available in a diesel pickup truck. I do think the Ford has better rims and bumpers, though.

Here here for the 5600! By going with the stick, I didn't have to settle.



I sincerely hope that the new Ford works out well for you. Please let us know how you like it. The 6. oh that I drove had a VERY impressive auto transmission-- but that was it. It wasn't enough to make me leave my CTD. If I were a guy that needed an auto trans, my decision to buy Dodge would NOT have been so easy...

It's kind of funny, because I was a Ford guy and wrestled with the same issue when I decided to go from my 87 F250 6. 9L to a new truck. I looked at the Fords and although I liked their body style slightly better than the Dodge, the Dodge interior + CTD + NV5600 + Quad Cab + Ford's 6L issues = Dodge being the best truck for me at the time. Now that they have most of the 6L issues worked out, and the integrated brake controller, but the new body style I don't care for but, if I were to buy another truck, I'd have to weigh the options again.
 
Have at it. Ford used to be my favorite. But the terrible turning radius,marginal brakes and 6. 0 problems,led me to Dodge,my Dodge truck is as tight now as the day i bought it. I love the Fords interior room,but the aforementioned issues were too much to hack. Good luck to ya..... ;)
 
Having driven all currently available diesel trucks before ordering my 05 3/4 ton, the Ford was very high on top of the list - after all, it has an integrated trailer brake controller. But the poor ergonomics of the interior (not to mention the atrocious steering wheel) including the mediocre interior quality control and panel fitment kept me away from that iron. The Dodge I drove with the NV5600 had far superior drivability (even with a 9000 lb trailer behind it) than either the GM or Ford products did.

Competition is a beautiful thing. The manufacturers will keep upgrading their products with hope that "you" or "I" will find that ONE feature on the truck we didn't think we could live without. For some of us that means the entire package, for others it’s the "fluff and chrome". To each their own.
 
Sounds like a nice truck and for a pretty good price too!

Did the fact that Ford has a real crewcab influence your decision?

just on the side- our Fire Dept has the 6. 0 in our new F-650 Brush truck. looks like a horror to fix, but with a pump, 400 gal of water, and 100 gal of foam, it had no problem pulling our mountains. did pull down, but that is expected, did much better than i thought it would.

good luck with your new ford!!! i don't think you will have any problems with the new 6. 0. of course anytime they come out with something new like that, they will have problems for a while, and it has been a while. are you going to get the new in dash brake controller? i thought that was pretty sweet. :D
 
Did you read the July 23 '04 USA Today Money report "Engine problems for diesels"? You have been reading too much Ford propaganda I think. It is pretty clear that Ford lets their customers do the testing for them. I guess I'll stick with my twice worn out 95 CTD and half again worn out 98 CTD (both with OE automatics) until guys like you have tested these unproved new Fords. Good luck.
