I wish I was half the mechanic some of the guys here are so I could provide information that would be more useful. Having said that, here goes:
My '92 has been running AmsOil syn for the last 60K miles with no ill effects; no leaking. The thing I like about it is that in my colder climate the oil doesn't act as sluggish this time of year when I first turn it over and need to get things lubricated quickly. I only have about 140K miles on my truck.
Lastly, I'll paraphrase what I heard a rep from Mobil say about synthetic oil: It has an affinity for leaks. If there is anyplace it can find a way out of the engine, it's going to do it. But as I said, I haven't had any trouble at all. No leaking and at 25 degrees below, it's nice to see the gauge climbing when I turn it over.
P. S. On your comment "Getrag ready to blow", I just went through that. Do what you can to get it checked NOW. I waited one day too long and now have the pleasure of owning a brand-new NV4500 and new clutch. Not to mention walking is a pain.
