I am curious if there are any Syclone or Typhoon owners in the TDR. I love my Syclone, and use to own a 93 white on white typhoon. I should never have sold it:confused:

I'm not an owner but I have quite a # of friends that own them.

I drove a buddy's 10-second Syclone... . simply incredible.

Absolutely amazing vehicles.

If you wanna go fast, let me know.

My last vehicle before the CTD was a Buick Grand National, forerunner(powertrain wise anyway) to the Cyclone/Typhoon.

Daily driven 12 second commuter. :D

My little brother still has it, I have visitation rights. :D

Actually I can't really disagree more... .

Just to name a few differences:

Syclone/Typhoon has 4. 3L V6 turbo.

Buick GN/T-Type has 3. 8L V6 turbo.

Sy/Ty has batch fire injection.

GN/T-Type has sequential injection.

Sy/Ty has 700-R4 (4L60) auto transmission.

Buick GN/T-Type has 200-R4 auto transmission.

Sy/Ty is all wheel drive with 7-5/8" rear diff. ring gear (10-bolt).

Buick GN/T-Type is rear wheel drive with 8-1/2" rear diff. ring gear (10-bolt).

Sy/Ty uses Mitsubishi TD05-17C water cooled turbo.

Buick GN/T-Type uses Garrett TE series non-water cooled turbo.

Sy/Ty uses air-water intercooling.

Buick GN/T-Type uses air-air intercooling.

The two drivetrains couldn't be any more different, but they are both V6 turbos. The GN's engine was designed from the get-go to be a turboed setup... . can't say that about the Sy/Ty... it's a hodge-podge of parts all thrown together that somehow seems to work quite well.

I don't mean to be a pain in the butt, but these are just my observations/experience.

Matt

Lets not split hairs. Both are GM products, and lets face it, I'm sure the info was shared.

Do you think the Syclone/Typhoon would have been a reality if there was no GN?

Case closed.

Stop being a pain in the butt. :D

Eric

BTW your avitar is distracting too!:D

I have a friend who had a syclone... . wrecked it!! Sold it three days later. He loved it, but didnt like the idea of having a wrecked vehicle.

He went to the SUV side.

Splitting hairs is fun!

Yes, information was shared.....

A now defunct company called PAS built the GN/turbo T-Type, '89 turbo Trans-Am, and the Sy/Ty's (a few other cars too... )..... they took the freshly painted driveable vehicles right from GM and put the fancy schmancy interiors and exterior goodies on them and then shipped them to the dealers. Some believe that the exterior graphics (stickers) were put on at the dealer... some don't think so. There's a lot of speculation.

The information sharing process must have been really bad... ... the '89 turbo Trans-Am was an improvement drivetrain wise over the GN/turbo T-Type (better cylinder heads), but the Sy/Ty's are a complete headache when it comes to making them run right (stock vs. stock). Distributorless ignition from the GN would have solved at least 50% of the Sy/Ty problems... . poor cylinder heads, a weak bottom end, etc. , are some other problems.
