My buddy has a 98 5 speed and is having some problems shifting. The truck has about 80k miles and is stock. Used to pull horse trailers. Any feed back on syncros would be appreciated.
A couple of things to check/ think of. If the "pilot bearing" is worn or dragging or the clutch is not fully disengaging this can act like "bad synchros" The wrong fluid in the transmission can cause them to act up. The sychronizers are normally just a cup and cone "clutch" only need just a little bit of friction to work. The recommended oils will do that for you. If you put in space age low viscosity synthetic lube that did not have manual transmissions as a listed application- that would cause it. Most all lubes sold/ listed for transmissions will not give any problem in this area( it would be expensive for them to get it wrong ) And then of course is the synchros themselves. If you do not use a clutch to shift the "cup and cone" clutches can wear. The teeth can get rounded and start popping you out of gear ( grind 'em till they fit )
And of course the linkages and pivots can get worn. In conclusion IMHO for a stock truck look at the clutch/ pilot bearing first and the transmission after that. Check/change the light bulb before you rip out the light fixture. Someone with a little more new process/new venture experience should chime in. This is sort of based on my experience with an A-833 4 speed ( way back machine) although gearboxes have not changed much maybee they have.
