Synthetic fluids???

I am curiose to find out what kind of experience those of you out there whom have tried the synthetic fluids and what results you may have had with the different types?? We are considering going to synthetic in my fathers 2001 automatic transmission with hopes of better temperature control, but are leary having heard horor stories of problems so any input on past expeiences would be greatly appreciated!
