I'm going to start pulling my new 5er soon. In the past, I haven't done any heavy duty towing with my RAM, but my 5er will weight in around 12k. I keep reading and hearing about the use of sythetic lubricants when towing heavy loads. Would appreciate some input on where I should use them i. e. Trasmission, Rear End, Front end etc.

At a minimum, the rear diff and adding the MagHytec cover with added capacity is nice insurance. I'm an auto man so not much help w/your 5sp.

Try the search feature on this site and the Ford site. TONS of information out there.

Change over bumper to bumper, the diffs and trans at the minimum.

Put synthetics in the differentials for sure. The transmission already has a synthetic in it, it is up tou you if you want a different synthetic in there. I would recommend synthetic 5-30 motor oil in the transfer case too.

You might want to consider LE 607 for the axle gears. It's not a synthetic, but it is reported to be excellent. I just put a Mag-Hytec diff cover on the rear and used this gear oil--not that that says anything, other than I'm recomending you consider an oil that I actually use.

Look in your owners manual. I think it calls for 75w140 synthetic for the rear if you do a lot of towing.

As per the trans, it says "use of anything but Mopar synthetic trans oil will void warrantee" they sell it for $25. 00-$30. 00 per quart, it holds 4 quarts.

Now the truth. The 5 speed takes a fluid that is GL-4, not GL-5. The problem is GL-5 has a lot more Phosphoris (spelled wrong) in it. The problem is IF the GL-5 gets above something like 220 deg F, the phosphoris will "plate" onto your syncros and cause major trans problems. This problem has been seen on a trans running on a test fixture

Now in real life, people here who have trans temp gauges on there manuals have said "you will NEVER see that temp even towing in your 5 speed". So I run Amsoil 2000 in my 5 speed and feel it shifts better now then it ever has! Do a search on Amsoil or NV-4500 and you will finds a months worth of good reading!

I also sleep at night not worrying about using this oil in my 5 speed. Plus it was around $7. 00 or $8. 00 per quart.

I wonder if DC would actuall try and prove that you used a brand other then there Differential fluid?. Is'nt there some law that says a dealer cant void a vehicle warranty if the customer uses aftermarket filters, fluids, etc?. Anybody know the deal with this?

They can't just say "your voided". There has to be a sample taken to see if the oil caused the problem.
DC's way around that law is by saying your trans is "lifetime fill" If you do this, you will be sorry!
If ANY oil failed in ANY compononent, the oil manufactorer picks the tab up.
Always get the dealer to put in writing what your warranty was voided for. They will usually fix it before they will put it in writing.
Amsoil has been using their Series 2000 GL-5 75W-90 in these transmissions since 1994.
No problems.

I have seen the factory lubed trans a year newer and 20,000 less miles than mine, and I was glad I had the Amsoil in!

Synthetic in the rear and in the transmission. Expensive but worth it.
