Hi SturgeonMike,
Four Wheeler Magazine, September 1999, had part 3 in a four part series called Project MPG, in which they tested different modification to improve performance and mileage on a 1988 Dorf F350 4x4 Centurian Dualie Bronco conversion with a 460. Granted, there is a lot different about that truck, but what I think what is relevant is this: When they changed the fluids to Torco synthetic gear lubes and engine oils and Pro-Blend additives in the engine, trans, radiator, transfer case, diffs, the following happened:
10-60 acceleration dropped from 14. 11 to 13. 69 seconds
City mpg improved from 5. 9 to 6. 1 (ouch!), but that is 3. 3%.
Hwy mpg improved from 9. 6 to 9. 9, 3%.
Rear wheel horsepower up from 200 to 206.
Rear wheel torque up from 386 to 387.
They even included a column for number of miles to pay for the upgrade, based on mpg improvements and the gas prices a year ago - in this case 38,991 miles. That doesn't include, of course, reduced wear on parts due to lower heat.
They did an amazing job ensuring outside temperatures, wind conditions, and driving the same highway/city loops to keep the baseline as close as possible, fascinating article. Some of the best improvements were not due to exhaust and intake mods - they were things like a cooler thermostat (8% torque gain), wrapping intake air with Design Engineering Cool Tape (3% torque gain), fuel regulator (11%). K&N was only 2% and headers were only 1. 5% torque and 5% horsepower.
Sorry to digress a bit, but I felt folks could extrapolate and with very few $$$'s get even more gains out of their rigs.
thanks, jon.
