I would like to run synthetic oil during the winter for the lower viscosity, I change my oil frequently enough that i can't justify synthetic all the time (i don't like the soot in my oil, whether its a problem or not, it bothers me. ) so is there any problem with switching back and forth between dino oil and synth? also, if i run synthetic should i get 0w40 or 5w40?

I run Rotella 5W-40 T-6 (synthetic) all the time and I like it. It is cheaper than Amsoil (only ~22-25 dollars a gallon depending on where you shop). When my oil pan was changed under warranty, they refilled with stock 15-40 dino. Now that it is cold, I can really see the difference in ease of starting. I changed my batteries (6 years old) because I thought they were dying. With the new batteries, it still turns over slower than with the old batteries and the Rotella. Just my experience.

Savings!

You cant beat Amsoil synthentics for cost per mile. Its 50% less than dino oil. PM me for cost or go to AMSOIL - Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy-Duty Diesel Oil (HDD) for the 5W-30 info or to

AMSOIL - Synthetic Diesel & Marine Motor Oil SAE 15W-40 (AME) for the 15W-40 info. Both are extended drain intervals oil when used with the Amsoil Ea filter (EAO-80): AMSOIL - AMSOIL Ea Oil Filters (EaO, Ea15K)

I run Amsoil in our 2 cars, 2 trucks, lawnmowers and several retail customers including a towing company (the liked the extra $300 per truck they were saving on oil changes X 15 tow trucks).

I use their 5/30 in my signature truck and change it at about 18K miles with a filter change at the half-way mark. The last analysis showed the oil still had plenty of life left in it.

OE oil

I am trying out the OE oil to see how long it can last. Gotta love that oil test!

Yes, the AMsoil OE Diesel 15W-40 oil is much less than the 100% 15W40 AME by a considerable amount, but the OE diesel oil does not last as long as the AME does. The OE Diesel oil is even less money per gallon then the Rotella or Dello is, and is a "Synthetic".

Amsoil has conducted a test using Class 8 trucks in short haul applications. Two identical trucks (2001 KW with N14 Cummins) were run through a 40 mile course using the SAE J1321 In-Service Fuel Consumption Test Procedure. Both trucks were well broken in with over 750K in mileage. The truck equipped with Amsoil fluids (engine, trans, rear) had a 6. 84% increase in fuel mileage. Using Amsoil in your truck is a money saving idea. PM me or any of the other Amsoil dealers to find out more and start saving $$ while you drive.

Absolutely nothing wrong with switching back and forth. Since you have an 06 and are running stacked tunes your engine is producing alot more soot than a stock engine so it only makes sense that you would not do extended OCI's.

I do 25,000 mile oil changes, only one oil filter and no bypass using Amsoil AME with a single analysis report when the oil is changed. I'm on my fifth oil change using this method. Foe me Amsoil pays for itself, especially since I get it at dealer/preferred price + tax and no shipping.

I would love to do the extended change routine for cost and convenience but I have wondered about it since I might do 18K in two years or longer. Is the time factor part of the equation? I live in Alabama so dont see much below freezing driving.

Here is what the AMsoil recommendations are for "Personal light truck vehicles with Diesel fueled engines"

NORMAL & SEVERE: 3X OEM recommendations, not to exceed 50,000 miles/600 hours or 1 year*.

1-*Drain intervals may be further extended in accordance with the oil analysis or OEM recommendations.
2-*Normal & Severe service is defined by the OEM, refer to your manual.

You must realize, shorter drives are harder on engine oils than longer ones.
Personally, I utilize the "By-Pass filtration system" and oil analysis every 10,000 miles to determine my drain intervals, and have gone as much as 105,000 miles without pulling the drain plug.

You can use the Heavy Duty Diesel Oil for 25K miles, just change your filter (EA-O80) once a year if you don't drive much.

I routinely exceed their time limit, but when I start my truck, it typically runs 2-5 hours in highway driving. I use the old Mercedes for all the local runs.

I use Mobil 1 5w-40 synthetic and take oil samples when changing oil at 8,000 miles. Blackstone said I still have a lot of TBN left, so I can extend to 10,000 next time. All my numbers are good. I may do a few more at 10,000 then switch to Amsoil and see if there is a difference. (my TBN was around 6)

Just because you still have a decent TBN number and viscosity is ok, doesn't mean it's ok to continue to run the oil though, right? I'm thinking my '06 with 650 hp, always working hard, towing hard, doing real truck stuff. The soot loading at the fueling necessary to achieve that power level is pretty heavy, even with bypass filtration.

I used Amsoil, and towed heavy(23,000 gross) with my Smarty on level 3. Even with an Amsoil by-pass system, soot thickening was problem at extended drain intervals. I removed the by- pass filter and went back to Delo and 5000 mile changes.

I can't believe you would remove the By-Pass system, as it is the very best filtration you can get! Your engine would benefit greatly by using the By-Pass filter, even if you changed the oil as you are currently doing.
