synthetic oil

I'm at my oil change over 10,000 mile and was considering switching to a synthetic.

Which oil is best ?

Should i switch to synthetic or stay with rotella 15/40?

Amsoil it. Or if you want to spend more money for no better of a product go with Redline. JMHO

Rotella T every 3,000 does an engine good.

Go with Delo until 15k or 20k, use the extra time to read all the old threads, then decide.

(Me: Factory, then Delvac 1300, two changes, then Delvac 1, then Amsoil 5W-30 for about 60k, recently switched to Amsoil 15W-40 and plan to stick with that for awhile).

Rotella and Delo will both get you to 500k with 5-7k changes, what more do you want? Save your money and skip the syn oil.

As others are saying, I would go at least 20K before switching, Mine took at least that long to break-in.



I use Amsoil but my reason is different. My truck sits most of the time and the Amsoil I use is made for that application (I think its the high TBN value that fights corosion, but there are many others here that could go a lot further in depth then I can)



I change it every year in the spring, which is about 5000-7500 miles.

If you go for the extended drain intervals some here use, the expense difference is reduced - but I wouldn't do extended drain intervals without at LEAST a good bypass oil filtering system in addition to the stock full-flow - and even THEN, I'd change oil at about 30,000 miles or so...



Nothing wrong with synthetics - just a question as to whether you will REALLY obtain any actual wear or reliability benefits that will benefit your situation - Cummins will ALREADY do 400 thousand miles or better without O'haul with relatively inexpensive conventional oils - multiply how many miles per year YOU expect to drive it, then do the math to see how long it will take YOU you to put 400,000 miles on it, then decide...
