Going to try out my new fiver over new year. Going to put in new fluids and filters in everything before I go. Can't afford the double deep pan on this one, bombing budget gone for now.

If I go with synthetics I have to COMPLETELY drain the transmission right? Would it be worth it or should I wait to get the Mag-Hytec pan before going to synthetic? Any Amsoil dealers in the Dallas area or somebody email or PM prices to me (so we don't get in trouble. )

Thanks,

Glenn

TDR magazine I just got has Genos catalog #34 and on page 6 under technical tips:Transmissions(Scott Dalgleish) it tells how to do it.

Fluid Change.

Glenn,

The article in the Geno's catalog says when draining the lines to have eng. running and trans. in park, I found mine would not pump much fluid out the line untill I put trans. in neutral then it flowed out nice. ;)

Which Line.......

If I remember correctly, genos catlog did not say which transmission line at the radiator to remove... . is it the one going to the top or the one at the bottom... ... ...

Thats a good question. I don't have an auto so I haven't done it or know. But you never knows whats in the future.

BFC,

I have changed out many of the Automatics in these trucks and installed the Amsoil synthetic ATF. You do not have to get every drop of the petrolium oil out, as the synthetic is compatible with the petrolium stuff. The main thing is to get most of it out so you have the majority of the petrolium removed.

This is how I do it.

I remove the line on the rear of the transmission, drivers side, and put a rubber hose on the line, then get a transparent container that will hold at least 8 quarts. When this is done, put transmission in nuetral and start the engine. When the fluid quits coming out and starts spitting air, shut off the engine. The next step is to remove the pan. (Taking out the oil first helps to keep the mess down when the pan is removed)

I always install a new filter at this time, so I allow the oil to drain for awhile after the filter is off, then I install the new one and put the pan back on and put in four quarts of ATF, and start the engine again and let it pump out. Then hook up the lines, and refill the transmission. Make sure you do not overfill! The truck needs to be on a level surface, and the selector in nuetral.

Best of luck,

Wayne

Nothing but trouble..........

I ordered a 2. 5 gallon jug of amsoils synthetic ATF... ... I drained and installed the old style of filter(no metal/plastic houseing around filter assy)... ... . filled the transmission... ... . and no i am haveing nothing but problems... ... the transmission keeps switching between 3rd and 4th when i am cruising... ... . just took a trip to Moss Point Mississippi from Lake Charles louisiana... ... and had to fight it the whole way... ... . checked my fluid level and it looked good... ..... What gives... ... . Maybe i should have stuck with Mopars ATF... ..... when installing the old style filter it has three holesw verses the two hole stock filter... ..... i just removed the screw that lined up with the 3rd hole and re-installed it going through the 3rd hole... ... ... . what could i have done wrong... ..... or do some transmissions just not cooperate with amsoils atf?????? Help What do i do?????

The problem is not the fluid. Not knowing you experience with transmisions and not wanting to flame some one, Are you checking the fluid hot and in neutral? If your trans is stock you cannot check it in park.

Next, explain the filter some more. Two holes? Three holes?

The trans requires a single hole for the fluid to go thru , the old stlye had 2 and won't filter the fluid if used on the od trans.

Now the problem sounds like the fluid is getting airiated. Figure it out soon before you damage it.

Jason,

Refer to the Chrysler owners manual for checking fluid level properly in the auto transmission.

Its a whole process, my guess is that your low on fluid.

Make sure you installed the correct filter.

I'm no transmission guru......

But I know who is. Give Bill K. A call. The filter you installed is the correct one. I seem to recall that the synthetics do not have the friction modifiers needed by this trans. You may have to add some. But don't take my word for it. Call the pro.

transmission troubles.....

Fox--- I had a 96' 2500 CTD Auto, 4. 10, and i changed the fluid in it no problem..... Yes when i changed the fluid in my 99' 3500 CTD I did check it hot and in nuetral... The holes in the filter i was referring to are the mount holes..... on my 96' when i had it there are three mount holes for the filter assembly. . on my 99' 3500 there are two mount holes and the filter is incased in a metal/plastic housing... Well dodge messed up when the created this filter... now when anyone brings in there truck for a fluid change they install the old style filter with no metal/plastic housing and it has three mount holes... . that is why i installed the old type fiber filter with no caseing...

jwiolliams3---I have checked the owners manual... ... and rechecked my fluid level..... everything is good.....

I dropped my pan twice today and reaplaced the amsoil atf with mopar atf+3... . went through about 3 gallons of it..... through the process of trying to flush the transmission... still no help, transmission still jumps back and forth between 2nd and 3rd with overdrive off... ... and with overdrive on it jumps back and forth between 3rd and fourth... .....

NOW WHAT???????

It might be as simple as a reflash. DC came out with a reflash for gear hunting, I don't remember the number, but my truck had it done. Ask your stealer about it.
