There was nothing serious wrong with it other then some slightly elevated wear metals.

YUP - there it is again - anyone else starting to see the trend? ;) :D

I knew it wasn't just my imagination! ;) ;)

Yep, I saw that toooo! :-laf

I cain't speak for Gary, but yeah you did run just a little too long; as the clue was "elevated wear metals". Should you have that with the most expensive oil and bypass filter?

I've pointed out here a few times before the not uncommon tendency for synthetic lubes to display noticeably higher wear numbers than Dino-based oils in the same typical service - yours was just another example of that fact - nothing more... ;)

Here are the numbers for my last four samples.

I don't know what's with the copper going up and down. It changes even while on the same oil from sample to sample (oil cooler?). I also don't know why the silicone was going up and down as I hadn't even had the engine open or messed with the BHAF filter. I did change the filter though just to make sure. I agree, I wish the filter would take more of the wear metals out. It lowers the soot numbers noticeably but not sure about the rest. Right now I'm trying out the 15w40 oil, which is the sample on the very top with 25k miles on it. All the others are the Series 3000 5w30. I would love to have a better filter that would keep those numbers lower if there is such a thing and that didn't have to be changed every few thousand miles like the franz.

comments/suggestions welcome. I'm still learning what works best now that I'm stacking the miles on really fast. No one works on my truck but me so changing oil really often would be a hassle, not to mention expensive. Currently this thing is using about 1 qt. /3,500 miles so it gets plenty of make-up oil. I am due for a sample and filters coming up soon so I will see what 50k looks like on this 15w40 that has nothing but open road and no stop and go driving at home like the oil on the bottom three samples had that was installed some time in '03.

Dunno about the copper #'s - but Silicon is one of the oil additive components, and is present in new oil right out of the container - not the same structure as damaging dirt based silicone, but for other beneficial function - anti-foaming as I recall...

Royal Purple 75/140 in the diff couldn't find it in the auto supply stores so I bought it on-line from RPMoil.com free shipping in 48 states

Amsoil is by far the most cost affective way to go. Now with the new EaA and EaO air and oil filters makes it even more cost effective.

Use the Series 3000 HDD 5W-30 in the engine, Sever Gear in the diffs. and the Universal ATF for auto trans and the new Synchromesh MTF if its a manual.

With the new filters you can go 25K miles or one year on both the oil and filter or 15K miles if sever service. Sever service is hauling or towing heavy loads, stop and go traffic or short trips of 10 miles or less.
