[soapbox]This stuff can be had for right around $13. 50/quart... give or take a little... plus shipping, of course. That's more coin than most synthetics...



I've read a little bit here on the TDR and some folks seem to think that you're playing with fire by NOT using it in your NV-4500. Other folks have had good luck using a few different brands of oil... mostly GL-4 rated gear lube... some with add-on additives, etc.



I have had conversations with some folks that claim that Syntorq is nothing more than 5W-30 engine oil with some snake oil added to it so that evil things don't happen to your transmission.



Man, talk about a tough decision...

There was an extensive test done by Joe Donnelly (I think) comparing several different lube fills for the NV4500. I think it is still somewhere in Fritz's site. The upshot was that Syntorq performed best under all test conditions and recommended it's use in the transmission.

I had a friend at a GM dealer get me the Syntorq for around $12 a quart. Even their normal price is less than Chryslers. It only takes about 4. 5 quarts and when I drained the old stuff it was spotless. When I change it again I might go with Redline though.

@ $12/quart, that's still too much money for transmission oil.



I found a place that allegedly sells 16 gallon barrels of it for around $350. I have a feeling that I wouldn't go through that much oil the whole time I owned the truck. :rolleyes:



I wish I knew what was in the transmission right now. It shifts great and I want to keep it that way. I can hear some of you thinking to yourselves: "Matt, shut up... lay the cash down... and fill it up with the liquid gold (Syntorq)!!" :-laf



More than anything, this thread was intended to allow me to sound off (moan/complain... ) that Syntorq is WAY overpriced. :)

To each his own.



IMHO - "Lifetime" only implies that it will probably just barely make it out of the warranty... at which point the consumer is more responsible for their own actions.

I get my syntorq from standard trans and gear from texas. Cheapest place I found, they just ups it to your door. I used it in my 99 for 130k and my 02 for 70k-- no problems at all







02 2500 ctd 4x4 5 speed LS 3. 54 70k oem lift pump, dedicated to a clean truck, mostly stock
 
Standard transmission was the only place I could find that sells the stuff in user amounts, but I didn't know about the GM cross usage at the time.

Best I recall it was slightly less than $15. 00 a quart (sold in gallon jug)delivered from Texas to me in Washington, so the actual quart price without the ship is probably a little less than the $13. 50 mentioned.



Matt, "that Syntorq is WAY overpriced" - Be grateful, the stuff for the NV5600 is twice as much!
 
Even if Standard Trans. has the best price on the stuff... it still doesn't justify how expensive it is.



I've heard owners of NV-5600's complain about how expensive and rare the blood was for those beasts... but I don't recall any specific prices mentioned...



Gene: I have looked into your brand - and it's cheaper by a LONG shot compared to Castrol's Syngold. I just don't want to end up regretting not going with the OEM stuff in the first place.



If I put your brand in my transmission, do I have to get stickers and plaster them all over the truck? I guess I couldn't make fun of it anymore if I did that... :)

No, forget it Matt, I wouldn't want a SHEEPLE running the good stuff.



If you want to follow DCs ideals, then just leave it in bud, lifetime fill, rock on. Oh yea, better put a stock tq plate back in too, and small injectors, etc, etc, etc. :cool:

I guess I had better call Paul and get me some Series 2000 - I never want to do anything to my truck that DC recommends. :D

find a truck garage that carries it in bulk 35 gallon cans you can get it alot cheaper. I buy it for my shop. you wouldnt belive the price break if i told you.

I hate to think that packaging it into quart bottles makes the cost more than DOUBLE.



I don't have anywhere to put a 16 gallon can of it out here... if I was back in MA, it would be a different story... Dad would have to trip over yet another thing in the garage. :)

I thought I read somewhere that the reason the Syntorq is so expensive is that it was designed specifically for the NV4500, and no other transmission uses it. Something about the yellow metals used in the synchros require it, or somesuch, due to the lifetime-fill requirement.



Anyone know otherwise? And does anyone besides Dodge/GM use these transmissions?



If this is indeed the case, it would kinda explain the prices, and the reason Castrol doesn't sell it in quart bottles at Wal*Mart. If it's only used in heavy-duty Dodge and GM trucks, after all, there's not going to be much retail demand for it...

You can buy a gallon container of it for $54 or $13. 50/quart

Even if it is only used in NV-4500's (which I highly doubt) - the math still doesn't come out right.



For example: If you buy engine oil by the quart or the 55 gallon drum - you don't see that much of a price difference... it sure as heck isn't less than 1/2 the price if you buy it in a drum rather than by the quart/gallon.



Lifetime fill requirement? Hogwash. Any OEM that claims that ANY fluid is lifetime fill is full of garbage.
