I called the dealer when I got the letter, They said that with the truck in park and not stepping on the brake pedal, see if you can shift it out of park. If it shifts out of park you need the recall fix, if not you are good to go. Mine wouldn't shift out of park so waiting on the pump parts to hit the dealership

that is the test, not the "fix". 2017 and 2018 get a BCM (module) update if it passes the test, so if you hold your foot on the brake in park the solenoid will release after 2 mins to prevent overheat. You would have to re-apply the brake to move out of park after 2 mins.

I repeat, that is the test, not the complete recall. If it fails the test you need the part replaced and the software update. Earlier models not sure what they are doing.

They obviously have no idea what's going on so the test makes absolutely no sense. What happens is the plunger in the shift interlock solenoid gets stuck in the retracted position when hot. This can happen because it's either hot outside or the solenoid itself gets heated up by holding the break pedal down for some time (it has an electromagnet inside).

I was able to replicate it once on my truck once as follows. The truck sat outside in about 80F.
1) Hold the break pedal down
2) Take the shifter out of park while continuing to hold the break pedal
3) Now put the shifter back in park and continue to hold the break pedal
4) Hold the break pedal down for another 30 seconds or so
5) Take the foot off the pedal and without holding the break down take the truck out of Park

You should *never* be able to take the truck out of park without the foot on the break but under the right condition the plunger in the solenoid doesn't extend and gets jammed in the solenoid and you are able to take the truck out of park without the foot on the brake.

I am not going to take it in for that recall anyway. I actually hope I could shift it out of park without putting my foot on the brake.

They are going to call people who don't get the recall done. The Fed's have been on all the manufacturers to get safety recalls completed.
