I now have over 100K on my 98 and have had the TC locking and unlocking problem several times. The first time was when I installed the Banks system and the problem was fixed by reprogramming the ECM. ( this was prior to my knowledge of TDR )
Later after DTT it happened again and Bill Kondolay suggested cleaning the battery terminals to eliminate stray voltage spikes. This fixed the problem but it would return after a few months and I would clean the terminals again.
A week or so ago it happened again and I also noticed the check gauges light would stay on a little longer than normal - about 15 seconds - and it seemed like it was not running quite as smooth as usual but nothing I could put my finger on.
I unplugged the power train control module plugs ( three plugs on the firewall behind the airfilter ) and filled them with dielectric grease. All is well again - the engine is smooth - shifts great.
I would advise everyone to invest a couple of bucks for a tube of dielectric grease and treat every electrical connection possible.
I'm sure this is not a cure all but it might help.
