I think the t-case in my dad's 03 6sp is gone. he said he tried to use 4wd this afternoon and made a horrible grinding noise and it would barely turn the front tires at idle and wouldnt do anything at wot. has anyone been into these and are they fairly simple to work on?

Does it have the Elctronic shift, or the manual shift?

it is the manual shift. My auto trans/manual t-case wont shift in the t-case if its in a bind and his always would-could this have something to do with it?

If you have the transmision in nuetral, the transfer case should shift much easier.

My transfer case exhibited a grinding noise as well, and eventually wouldn't go into 4wd at all. Mine is the electronic shift though, and was replaced under warranty...

standard transmission had a rebuild kit for $102 for the NP 271. they said it was pretty straightforward. ill let yall know asap. thanks for the help

T-cases are really straight forward. The bad part is trying to find parts that are in stock for them. They can be done in the truck, but removing them is not too bad, and easier to work on. If I were you I would start spraying some penetrating oil on the bottom attach stud. The ones around here are almost always frozen(but the winter salt around here is probably the culprit)

I spent 2-3 weeks, 3-4 trips to the dealer and $1700 by the time they (local dealer) found the problem with my '01. One of the gears was wore causing it to violently pop out of 2wd and the dipstick tech didn't see it the first time he had it apart. Plain as day but his geriatric eyes couldn't find it I guess. That's one instance where they should not have shown the customer the old part.

I don't go to that dealer anymore.

we tore it apart and found that the chain had stretched so bad that it drug the bottom of the case and would slip the teeth on the gears when in a bind. there wasnt any metal shavings or missing teeth, just a stretched chain as far as we could tell. we just dropped the drive line and pulled the rear of the case off. be sure to have special snap ring pliers handy
