T-case np 205 bad noises

I have a 1992 ctd 4x4 automatic when I am in two wheel drive the t-case is making a noise that sounds like a coupler is trying to engage - a big bang followed by a grind then silent then does it again and again with no pattern to the noise. I can get the noise to go away if I shift into 4wd. While in 4wd there is not a problem to be heard or felt. I have only had the truck for about 500 miles.



I searched and it seems that there is not an adjustment for the linkage but some new bushings or something like that.

From the way you stated the problem. You better get it pulled apart and checked. It could be a bent/worn shift fork or slider gear or something else. But it needs pulled and checked.

Have you tried moving the shift lever just fore or aft of the 2hi detent (not all the way to 4hi) to see if the noise goes away? Any noise in 4lo ?

Tried but the detent is very strong. - In 4 hi and 4lo it is quiet like it should be.

drive line failures, first time buyers

You need to tear it down now ! The main bearings or the housing they mount in are worn out and allowing too much axial movment... This is causing the syncros to not fully engauge... . The other thing it could be would be that a shifter fork pin has sheared or the fork is bent or broken..... This rarely ever happens... . Get ready for a big shock when you tear it down and a big bill after it is fixed... .



Things that cause t/cases to self destruct are pulling trailers that exceed the max GVW that Dodge recomended..... It does not happen in a day or a week... . But in time it slowly destroy's the drive line..... By the time it is noticed

or you start hearing noises the damage has been done... .



For those of you who are looking to buy a used first gen truck. Beware of 5th wheel or goose neck hitches in the bed... It is your first warning that the truck has been abused... Ask the owner what they hauled with it. . If they tell you they hauled a 5 car trailer up and down the highway . Plan on some very expensive drive line repairs in the near future. .

Oo. Had similar funny noises coming from under vehicle. Didn't know if in transfer case or main transmission. Definetly louder when I had my plow on. Turns out to be bad case of body mount rot. The transmission was actually holding up the truck body. Temporary fixed with 2x6 plank to gain clearance. You might want to check to see if you have adequate clearance between body and transmission and transfer cse. Oo.

How many miles on the truck? telltail use and abuse signs? 4hi or 4lo to silence it? 205's are virtually indestructable. I once bought a jeep with a "rod knock" for $250. Turned out to be a loose torque converter from the flywheel. Does your truck have manual hubs? limited slip? Are all adapter bolts between the transmission/t. c. tight? I don't know, more info please.
