Competition New pulling series

Competition who's truck is this?

I just broke my Transfer cases' case.

Stopped to investigate a noise after a hard 4wd launch, and discovered the front drive shaft was loose,, and then saw a boat load of ATF leaking on the ground,, I drove the truck to a lighted area, got a flashlight, and it seems like I cracked the case.

Looks and feels like I cracked the case just where the case starts extending from the "main" part of the T-Case to the Front driveshaft yoke. It's not a Huge Crack, but enough to have dumped all the fluid out in the 10 m,inute trip home.

I guess 25-35PSI Launches with 36x14. 5 Mickey Thompsons aren't too easy on those T-Cases.

I'll have to drop the skidplate to investigate further in the daytime, but I'm prayin' I can just "patch" it up for the time being.

If it is really just a crack (4WD Does still work, and doesn't sound funny) I'm hoping I can Silicone it, JB Weld it, or straight out Weld it.

Any Suggestions? Anybody have a 5-speed T-Case for sale?

Thanks.

Merrick Cummings Jr

Dropped the skidpate.

Just a crack,, Going to have an Aluminum welder come by and weld it up tomorrow.

On another note. This is the first time I've really ever launched in 4wd. I tried a couple launches right after I got the truck, and they felt okay, but it was about 120* outside. BTW, I did SEE 38PSI brake torqueing it, but back'd down to ~33 before releasing the brakes. Even a 12-15PSI launch feels real good.

Last night, it was about 75-80* and I launched on some good pavement, about 4 times with Mickey T''s and BOY, That felt GOOD!! I had an experianced drag racer with me, and he said it felt like a 1. 80 60' when I launched at ~30PSI.

I've got some plans for the T-Case, and I don't think it involves the words New Process.

Merrick Cummings Jr

No.

I was begining to investigate the 1st Gen 205's. How different is the bolt pattern on the T-Case from 1st Gens?

I plan for some hard use, so I don't even think the NP241HD will hold up for too long.

I did not ruin the gears, but actaully cracked the case. So I am thinking maybe even the HD case would not have heldt up.

Know any different?

(The gears probably aren't too far from being wasted in this one anyway. )

I'm not going to be doing any High Boost 4wd Launches with the Mickey T's anymore.

Just to squeek a little bit. I've got something to cure any traction problems,, hopefully to about a 45PSI 4by Launch. Now if I can get the drivetrain to hold together.

Merrick Cummings Jr

Me?

Good thing it's a Cummins. Otherwise I'd be going through motors too!

I shouldn't have been doing such a hard launch with such big tires. I would have stopped the 1st time,, but it felt SOOOO good.

I don't mean to break stuff on purpose,, I'm just having a good time. I don't consider myself to be an "angry" person, and I do hate tearing stuff up on purpose. (knowingly pushing past known limits) but, the 4wd launches felt too good.

Everybody needs to feel a 25PSI Launch!

Merrick Cummings Jr

Pro-fab makes some good ones too.....

I hope you don't plan on pulling with it in anything but the open class..... they don't take kindly to aftermarket t-cases in some pulling classes... .

Matt

Matt,

You make a good point. I'm not really planning on pulling with it, but if I do,, I don't want to start with the big dogs!! I think I have the HP, but, I don't think I will have traction.

I talked to Nathan (Idaho_CTD) and he gave me some tips to go on.

Is there anything in the rules about using a Dodge T-Case,, but not year specific? I'm looking at using a T-Case not from the trucks Generation...

Thanks,

Merrick Cummings Jr

The rules usually say to use an OEM T-case.

There's a few ways to interpret this... .

1) OEM for your very specific make, model, year truck... .

2) OEM for any 'pickup' truck

3) OEM for your make and model... . but not exact year (NP205 in earlier Dodges, etc. )

Bear in mind that the NP205's in earlier Dodges will have the front output shaft on the wrong side (passenger side pumpkin on the 1st Gen trucks... . ).....

I have seen NP208's and NP231's take some VERY severe abuse... . I would tend to think that a NP241/HD could withstand darn near anything except a 38psi extreme traction boost launch... .

My advice - loose the tall mud tires, loose the lift..... put in a NP241HD and call it a day.

Then it will just have to be called: "Stacked, not Jacked... "

How is the lift breaking my T-Case?

I guess I plan to do what you are trying to tell me.

The big tires are breaking stuff. Well,, No more 4wd on the big tires. (I do want the lift and tires for when I do go mudding and offroading, plus I like how it looks, if only it would ride a little softer)

Give me 4 more days, and I'll see about taking some pictures of my newest part breakers.

I wasn't really thinking 205,, I was sorta thinkin' the other way as years go by.

BTW, I think all I really have to do is truss the shiznit out of the T-Case, since I didn't break any internal parts, just the case.

Driveline angle with high torque. Angle is worse on the front due to the shorter shaft. This give high bearing loads and of course the case supports the bearings. Lift makes the angles bad. The hard core 4X4 crowd know how to fix it. (Reverse cut dana 70 anyone)??

Peter knows where I'm going with the lift business..... :)

If you must keep the lift - then you'll have to deal with the associated headaches. Driveline angles is a big one..... We could start a whole 'nother thread to discuss this, though.

Trussing the shiznit out of the case will lead you to find the next weakest 'fusible link'... . which hopefully won't be an expensive or PITA item to deal with.....

This keeps sounding like the typical case of: "If it hurts when you do 'that'... . don't do 'that'... . "

Matt

they made 205s that when both ways passenger side and drivers sied ouputs. . some of th efords and chevys had it oppisite of th efirst gen dodge etc. . so you could build a strong 205 for your truck etc. . later

deo

\x/ Hillfolk!

well in that "case" what is my problem I have had 4 new T-cases 2 complete rebuilds 2 new front housings 3 new second housings (the one right behind the frist one) and 4 new housings where the speedo goes. I have a 241HD and I don't launch in 4WD???

drice: Did J. R. Adkins teach you how to drive?! He's the only person I can think of (off hand... ) that has broken engine mounts in a CTD/Dodge... ... :-laf

Deo's right - the F*rds and Chevy's did have 205's with the output on the 'left' side..... BUT fiding one that will bolt up to a 47RH/E or a NV4500/5600 could be interesting. I haven't researched it..... Advanced Adapters probably has a kit - they have it all.

Matt

no but we must drive alot alike cuase I have cracked both moter mounts on the ctd

"great drivers break alike"

Merrick... did you look inside ????. . I'm betting you just didn't break the case but launched some internals also... . one tends to do the other. . JMHO

might want to crack it open and peek at it

I did!

I brake torqued it to 30PSI, then peeked under the truck ;)

All joking aside, I'll drop it down, and pop it in half. It's the smarter thing to do, thanks Gary.

A TDR Member has graciously offered a 5-speed 241LD to me.

I think I'll pop the "new to me" on in, with about 75% less miles, and take a look at my mesed up T-Case.

I'll see if I can crack the case of the cracked case.

Should I cryo the "new to me" T-Case? It's sounding to me like if I truss the case, and maybe cryo the internals, I could make it live at 25-~30PSI.

Thoughts?

Thanks a bunch guys. I really appreciate the information.
