Competition New pulling series

Competition who's truck is this?

Matt,

Mark Kendrick has also broken the motor mounts. My Dad used to break them in his 1st Gen. by his 4th motor mount, he was ready for a 2nd Gen.

if you can look at a DHD unit also... there is a big difference between the DLD and DHD

the tripple planitary v/s the single will spread the torque load much better as well as the much bigger chain... again MHO

worth the cost to convert [not a huge cost either]... a yoke and driveshaft custon [replacing just the case end or a donor shaft from a DHD unit

You could keep a tally, and when somebody says, "I haven't heard of any broken motor mounts,, you can say,, "au contrair, there have been xxx amount of reported broken motor mounts since 9/17/03"

I think the LD case is stronger than the HD case due to the lack of a PTO cover. Rember, its the case, not the gears you broke. The HD might be a step backwards. Forgett he 205. Maybe one of the 3g transfer cases or a aftermarket one for pulling would last to your driving abilites.

Cryo precipitates carbides out of steels. It works very well at making steel surfaces wear longer. I don't think it will do anything for Aluminum. Although, the thermal cycle may stress relieve it, which is something that should be done prior to final machining of the part not after.

I talked to Advance Adaptors several years ago and the guy was very reluctant to recomend the Atlas case for a CTD application, he didn't think it was strong enough. If they upgraded it, it had better be good to stand up to a current day Bombed CTD.

I thought Greg Whales noted some of the early second generation trucks used a 205. I think I saw one of these trucks years ago. I would assume the output is on the drivers side since the exhaust would have gotten in the way.

If you decide to try a 205 you will have to do the same launches to let us know how they compare;)

I agree with Jff24Gordn, the LD transfercase is stronger in the case but the HD has the stronger output shaft. I've not tried the 205 transfercase but the sled pullers tell me that it is not as strong as either of the 241's, weak internals. FWIW, Larry

just to comtinue the thinking... . in this area of the world ..... all of the carnage that" I " have seen is in the DLD units... and there have been several... not to say that the DHD units haven't had their problems, just that I have not seen them in the pulling rigs. . all of the broken ones are DLD and most switched to DHD with good luck so far... and IF a guy was worried about the cover weakness a guy could fab up a steel or T6 Aluminum cover v/s the stamped tin cover that would add additional rigidity...

Lets see Brandon, James, Chris, Adam [several times here with DLD's] all now are DHD's I think

I would think that your best bet is going for the NP271 on the 3rd- gen trucks. Aren't they supposed to be stronger than the 241s?

As for cryoing Aluminum, it WILL have beneficial effects... The NASCAR guys cryo all the brake calipers, valvesprings, etc... it works on almost any metal.

Cryoing Aluminum won't really make it stronger, but it will make it less brittle, so it would likely have prevented your crack from a sudden, jarring impact. Cryoing aluminum also makes it a little "springier", which is why they do softball bats and such with it as well.

Looks at it this way. . there are NO downsides to cryoing metal, especially any metal that is cast, forged, or extruded... .

Be nicer to your truck, Merrick, and I would say lose the lift as they others said...

Well, Yesterday, I put up a 241DHD unit, built for me, with the Automatic sized input shaft.

But,, I did find something out, :( The 241DLD and 241DHD's don't have the same output shaft...

Looks like I"m heading off in the morning to get a yoke from a Junkyard... (one of the good things of living on the border,, lots of junk readily available !!)

I cranked 'ole Jack up today for the first time since late Oct. he had a knock for about 3-4 minutes, but it went away after it came up to temp.

I got rid of the POS SPA gauges, and put two Autometers in it,, I'm waiting on some Di-Procal (or was it ISSPRO?) tell-tale's to come in,, and I'm waiting for the truck to stay together for 1,000 miles or so before I put more $ into it.

I let the truck idle for about 30 minutes in the driveway,, inspecting closely my new turbo's,, a Baby HX-55 and an HT4C Big Air.

I might be swapping back to some smaller DV's and injectors for the street, but I'm not so ready yet,, The smoke looks nice.

On Another note, my backup truck, and tow truck is coming together,, the last part I need before I can drop the motor I got from PDR, back in the truck, is coming in Wednesday. Can't Hardly wait!

Just thought I'd update yall.

Merrick. . you should read the whole posts LOL

9/16/2003 above... . "worth the cost to convert [not a huge cost either]... a yoke and driveshaft custon [replacing just the case end or a donor shaft from a DHD unit"

It's fun once in a while to say I told ya so..... LOL just yanking your chain Buddy. . even though there is a typo on custom

..... As I stumble back, and clench my chest, saying, in a dying tone... "OHHH, U GOT MEH!!

IF I would have paid more attention, I wouldn't be sitting here,, I would be driving my truck.

The transfer case I got from Roger_Rodbolt was lost just ~200 miles from my house, and UPS insurance covered it.

I finally bit the freakin' bullet, and got a transer case from www.blumenthalsmfg.com

It wasn't too hard to install. (I thought it was going to be a nightmare)

soontobeontheroad,

Merrick

EDIT: I tried to do a NP271, but the swap would have almost needed to have new axles put underneath the truck. It would have needed special yoke adaptors to go from teh Spicer units, to the AA units, and the shafts lengthened/shortened,, it would have been a nightmare, when the 241DHD's are holding up fine.

T-cases

I started my new job 6 months ago and i rebuild t-cases. Not to say it can't happen, but i haven't saw a broken front case half on a 241dhd,yet, but on the 241dld quite a few of them have broken cases, and thrashed out planetarys. The chain and mainshaft are bigger on the 241 dhd, than the dld. We have rebuilt a couple of t-cases for the 3g dodge, and they seem to be to beefy inside. The company i work for buys alot of core t-cases and some of them when we get them and look at them, people have tried to use silicone and tinfoil or pop cans to patch up holes in the case halves, kind of funny. Oo.

your right it can happen I have broken 1 front sections, 3 of the 2nd sections, 5 of the 3rd sections and none of teh 4th sections.

nfox, how big are the chains in a 271? Awhile ago i was told not to use them because their not as strong as the 241DHD, and that was from a guy who could of sold me a 271, and made more money...

I think with my current converter,, 25PSI will work better, I've launched with 13PSI and ran like a 1. 9 60'.

My turbo's only had 127 miles on them when I hopped on the dyno today and layed down 508, and 509HP.

I did plenty of test and tune today,, tomorow, I do a partial rebuild on the front end, and front driveshaft U-Joints.

I'm thinking about ladder bars, as it was brought to my attention, that It's possible for me to rotate my diff far enough to break the yoke, or U-Joints. (especially with the lift/blocks)

I plan to run the truck this Sunday at the track. I'm hoping to better my best time of 13. 7 @ ~98? (I can't recall MPH)

I have four slicks,, I will run in 2wd untill I break traction on the rears. Should I go ahead and run slicks on all fours to keep the rotating mass down? (Otherwise I wil run 36x14. 5 Baja Belted Mickey Thompson's)
