T or F: Dealer can't reflash speedometer on 06 for larger tires?

A buddy of mine has a new '06 2500 SRW with an automatic. He added a leveling kit and larger tires/wheels to the truck.



Anyway, he took it to his dealer and was told that they only have two tire size options for the 06's. Since his tires aren't one of the options they can't recalibrate the speedometer for him.



I did a quick search of the forum and found nothing on the subject so I'm assuming that the service guy needs some education and my buddy needs to find the revs per mile for his new tires. Am I correct??

The dealer tech is correct that under the tire size section of the programmer that is all there is. On the older trucks the tech has to go into the ABS section of the programmer and then they have to put in the rev's per mile for the new tire size; so your buddy will need to find out how many rev's per mile the new tires will make.

So, if I understand you correctly.



1. ) In the O6's they have added a tire size section to the programmer with limited options.



2. ) The ABS section still exists in the '06 and he can get his speedometer recalibrated the "old fashioned" way.

The 03-05's also have pre-set tire size options that were very limited. My dealer tech manually put in the rev's per mile (you need to know the number for your size tires) because the pre-set options were for 265/70/17 and 285/70/17 only and I was going to 315/70/17's. The place to do this for the 03-05's is in the ABS section by setting the pinion factor.



For 2006 you have to see if the option to set the pinion factor under the ABS section exists like it does for the 03-05's. It could be the tech doesn't know about it. Hopefully that's the case. If it's not there -- ask where else it might be.

I will check it out next time I see an 06... ... ... ... if I remember The 06 trucks use the star scan not drb so it may be gone. Totally different animal.

Bob -- We ran into that with my truck. He first brought out the new fancy Star Scan tool and he couldn't do it with that. He had to go get the big old clunky thing to do it.

Then he went back and got this thing that was shaped more like a big brick and looked pretty old and dirty. It just regular non-color LCD screen and some buttons. That one worked..... I don't know if the first one was the Star Scan tool but I was just assuming it was... ...

I did ck out the star scan on an 06 truck today,there is a menu for calibrating for tire changing. It is no longer in the abs section and no longer are we able to choose revs per mile. You have tire size,gear ratio,and diff brand and size

Man, that stinks. I guess it's another reason for naysayers to dislike the '06's. I don't think it would stop me from buying one, though.



Just have to get a Juice/Attitude or aftermarket GPS. If you run bigger tires, at least your warranty will be a little longner.

Well, if you have 4. 10s and then get a near 35" tire (ie 315s or a 35" that is in the 34. 5-35") range, then you could just input 3. 73 gears and it would be pretty damn close. 315s give you an effective rear end ratio of 3. 77 and a true 35" tire would give you 3. 70.



Not perfect for everyone, but works for a pretty big percentage of folks here.



And since 285s come on the power wagon, that should be an option too.

That's the problem. Only 265 and 285 tires are available to select from for 2006. No RPM (revolutions per mile) and no way to put in a ratio of any sort. Nothing custom. No way to put 3. 73 for a 4. 10, etc..... Bob4x4 says that the tool basically allows the service tech just 2 tire sizes (265 or 285) to choose from.

It did accept a wierd combo that I came up with. I didn't have time to gps it for accuracy either too busy right now. I will play more as time allows.

That's good news. If you can dial it all the way down to 3. 2X then even the 3. 73 geared guys are covered. Even a true 37" tire on a truck that came with 265s and 3. 73s only reduces the rear end down to 3. 19.
