I parked for a couple of hours today and when I cranked up to leave I noticed that the tach and speedo were not working. I got out and checked to see that all was still attached underneath by the transmission. Everything looked good. Even checked the fuses. Once I got on the road for a 1. 5 hour trip, much to my dismay, I also did not have 4th and 5th gear thanks to p. o. s. automatic. Anyway does anybody have any suggestions because tomarrow's 1. 5 hour long trip is going to suck traveling at a rate of I guess 55mph

Sounds like a PCM connector came loose or is corroded. Disconnect the negative on both batteries. Check all the connections on the PCM, behind the airbox on the firewall. Follow the cabling from it to the various parts of the truck as well, cleaning and checking connections. Use some dielectric grease on the connections when you put them back to seal them. Either something is loose/corroded or the PCM died I think.

Well checked the PCM and I all of the connections were jam up good, no corrosion. I was reading up on the vehicle speed sensor (trans mount) and the engine speed sensor(above the harmonic balancer) does anybody have any ideas about which one to maybe replace or a way to test them. Also ran a check on the engine problem codes, none appeared.

Well I decided to replace all thar I could afford. I replaced the vehicle speed sensor at the tail shaft of the transfer case. That was not it. Then I replaced the magnetic speed sensor on the rear end that was not it! So I removed the engine speed sensor that is above the harmonic balancer because it was covered in a 1/4 inch pile up of oil and dirt cleaned it all up, sure it was the problem, it was not it. So I guess I will have to take it to the stealer for a $70 diagnosis :(

Man, that sucks. Sorry, but I am out of info, and evidently no one else has any either. If you have a buddy that has a similar truck you could swap PCMs to see if that is it. Remember auto to auto and manual to manual swaps only, and the 98 12V is way different. The 24V PCM will not work either. Wish I could help more.

LSMITH- hey no problem, I appreciate the info that you gave me. The service guy that took the truck in this morning also thought that it is probably going to be the PCM. Anyways thanks again for the info earlier!

AMAZING!

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Thanks to the advice on the board you spent maybe a hundred bucks and a few hours and ended up not fixing the truck. All because you were sure the the dealer was an incompetent crook... . ironic, no?

Welcome aboard, parcher. You've all but stated that TDR members are both incompetent and crooks. You're off to a great start.

Please let us know when you need help.

Why are you here?

Wow, woke up on the wrong side of the bed I guess. Anyway the last part that I did not replace, the most expensive one, the vehicle speed sensor on the front of the engine was the problem. I am just glad that it was not the PCM!!!

Do NOT read between the lines of my post, I imply nothing. The Irony in my mind is the fact that throwing parts at a problem until it disappears is viewed by many as a better expenditure of time and money than going to the dealer.

gjacobs, I am glad you did not have to put out the money for a PCM, that would have really sucked. Glad you got it fixed too!! Just some more info to file away, and hopefully the search function will drag it up for the next guy.

Parcher, there is some amount of satisfaction in fixing things yourself that needs to be counted as well. Sounds like you have had at least a decent time with dealers, unfortunately a lot of us have not. The dealers around where I live are an absolute last resort, incompetence just begins to describe the service I have received. Crooked is another term that could be applied to some of them as well. Some of the membership is rather remote preventing service too. I hope your good relations with them continues, and I wish it was available here. Individual dealers and experiences dictate what we are comfortable with.

Please remember that no one can see your expression or hear your inflection in these forums, it is awfully easy to get crossed up with someone when you did not intend it. Your first post on this thread sounded condescending to me as well until I read the second.

Timinator, Someone has a bad time at a dealer and decides that ALL dealers are idiots, crooks, thieves, whatever. This is flawed thinking, you cannot judge a whole group by some of it's members. Some of the members here boast about their bombs, until something on the truck breaks then they hide all the modifications to get the "stealer" to warrantee the work... . this is crooked. One member needed a big hole-saw he did not own so he bought it, used it, RE-PAINTED it and returned it... ... . this is crooked. If I were to paint with broad strokes I would say that ALL TDR members are crooks, I am not so shortsighted. TDR represents a cross section of the population, many good people, some crooks. BTW I am an ASE certified Master Automobile Technician, Chrysler Gold Certified, I specialize in Driveability, auto and manual transmissions and front/rear axles. My expertise is gasoline, I'm new to diesel.
