Started for town this morning. Went about 5 milles,Tach died and check engine lite came on. when I went to pull out of a store engine died. Turned key off and restarted, truck stumbled a couple of times on the way home. Tach comes on and drops to 0 randomly. I have a p1693 code what can I check to correct this?

CBalla, your CKS (Crank Position Sensor) or CPS (Cam position Sensor) kicked the bucket (my guess anyway).

I am not sure which sensor yours uses, some years they used the Cam sensor, other years the Crank sensor. Without it working, your engine's ECM has no clue what position the engine is in and therefore cannot operate/time the injection process. That's why it no workie.

Good luck,

Vaughn

Mine did the same thing when the engine position sensor (crank position sensor) went bad. If so it is located behind the starter and you need to remove the stater to change it, don't worry it is not that bad.

Just had this happen with mine. Crank sensor is probably it. the engine will run but in "limp" mode. Get a new one from Cummins for $37 and change out. Have to pull starter. I had a tough time getting the old one out. It is held in position by a retaining clip but the o-ring is the problem. Had to destroy the sensor to get it to come past the rust between the o-ring and the side of the engine. Good luck.
