Tach for display only

Anyone ever hooked up a tach on a '92 5. 9 Cummins? I recently purchased an Autometer tach (#2888) with a probe that straps onto the alternator. Since its implementation, it has NEVER worked properly. At best, it would work irratically and simply die. I contacted Autometer and explained my problem, they sent me a new probe which still doesn't work. Instructions say to position sensor probe over laminations on alternator, however, my alternator does not have laminations. I have tried every possible position on the alternator and my tach still does not work. I was told by an electric specialty shop that I probably have the wrong tach for my application. The particular tach I have was recommended by Autometer and a local auto performance center, whom I had ordered through.

I see this is your first post. Welcome to the TDR. My 92 came with the factory tach so I can't be of much help. However, there are a number of first gen truck owners who have installed the after market tachs. I think you should post over on the First Gen Forum and you will more than likely get a response to your situation.
