A frined of mine has a 2000 CTD, 3500, QC, 5spd, 4X4, with an intermitent tach when the tach quits working the check engine light comes on and stays on until after the engine is shut down and started 4 or 5 times.

Would it be the crank position sensor? If so, where is it located? Also what do they cost?

Thanks!

You might check the engine speed sensor also. See if the two nuts holding it is loose. Gap should be . 049 to . 051. Tach will jump around and/or not register if ESS is loose and gap is changing because of sensor movement.

On a 2000, the gap for the CKP is non-adjustable.

Definately sounds like a bad CKP connection, or the CKP itself. The CKP is located just below the ECM, in the side of the block. Any codes set?
