Well, tried to get the tach going today but still doesn't work.

About a year 1/2 ago I had a set of gauges installed at the local Camping World. Pyro, Boost, and Tach. The tach never did work, the other 2 worked fine. I fooled with it a little and gave up. I talked to Piers at the Norcal get together a couple of weeks ago and he said it should work and asked if the filter wiring harness was installed. I told him I didn't think so, he said it must be for things to work. I went ahead and ordered a new harness and found out later there WAS one installed. Went ahead and replaced just in case the filter was blown. Tack is an ISSPRO 2" with 0-4000RPM range.

Well, still doesn't work. Tomorrow night I'll check to be sure I have 12 volts going to the tack and would like to check the tack signal but don't know what it is supposed to be. Do any of you experienced guys know what the signal is on the gray/ blue wire going to the tack plug?

Ground is OK, the light works and it is spliced into the ground for the tach. If the 12 volts and the tach signal is OK then I suspect it is the tach itself. The only other thing would be if the installer shorted something out and screwed up the ECM. I thought it might be the crank position sensor so I replaced that about a year ago, no change.

HELP!!!  :(

Tach Problem

Paccool, It was my luck that my 92 one ton didn't have a wiring harness installed. They didn't come out until 93. So I have the very uncomplicated system of a small magnet glued to the dampener, a small sensor mounted from the front pan bolt and a wire running to the tach. and a hot wire. Works like a champ.

I only bring this up so maybe you could purchase the parts for a 92 truck and loose the headache.

Hey Paccool, You live in Healdsberg? I know this is WAY of topic but I couldn't help it. I used to live there too. The only difference is when I lived there the tallest building was two stories. and it was all angle parking. The codingtown airport was still in the works and there was only two gas stations.

What's it like now?

Walmor, I have the magnet pickup kit, just wanted to see if I could get the harness to work. Did you put on one magnet or two? What you are saying is the signal to the tach is 12 volts when using this type pickup, right? What type tach do you have? I may have to go this route, sure is frustrating to spend a few hours working on something to have it not do what it should. :(

Dave, there is a new THREE story motel on the west side of the plaza. They tore down all the buildings on the west side of the plaza a number of years back and are now building things that are for the tourists, not meant for those that actually live here. On weekends we stay out of the downtown area due to all the tourists that feel they own the streets - I'd probably end up running some over if I went to town. They are building 500 new homes on the north side of town(guess where I live!) We have lived in our home for 28 years, used to have a 15 acre vineyard next to us, now there are 35 homes there. The City of Santa Rosa is putting a 4' sewer pipeline right thru the north part of town, said it is the best way, good of the people and all that crap. They could have gone around but seem to enjoy disrupting everyones lives just to make a point. The city leaders are mostly outsiders that have moved here to get away from the big city life but now want to make Healdsburg someplace for all the other city people to come visit, they don't seem to realize that by doing this they are destroying the very thing that made this such a neat place to live. I was born here in 1947, saw the good times and enjoyed growing up here but I am ready to leave.

Jeez, sorry about the rant. I'm not happy about all the changes in case you didn't notice!

Walmor, thanks for the info. Let me know about the magnets.

Greeting, sometime back I had installed a "Banks" 2-1/16 tach in my 92, it came with a for lack of beter terms: "a wire harness" I beleive both gage and harness were manufactureed by either Isopro or autometer with the banks logo.

The instructions siad that I had to use the filter lead if my tachometer was the small tach (2-1/16) verses the larger tach ( 3"?) needless to say when I connceted it as per the instructions it did not work. After checking other possibilities such as power, grounds and making sure my crank sensor was OK, I bypassed the filter lead (other-side of filter) and reconnceted the harness up. My tach has been working ever since, (Bogus instructions)

And yes this is to the factory option plug under the dash

hope this helps

Steve

Steve - THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!Oo.

Thiss was what I was hoping to get back from someone. Sounds like you have gone through the exact same thing. Now I wonder if someone put the filters in backwards?

I'll try tonight to bypass the filter and see what happens. I'll check for 12 volts first on the hot lead. Is your tach the 0-4000RPM model?

Thanks again!

Stan

Stan, yes it's the 0 - 40 X100 model, In my case, I had bought the tach and harness previously and it was almost a year before I installed it, so any recourse with the vendor would have been moot.

regards

Steve

Slay,

Looks like I have a diferent problem than you did. I checked the 12v hot lead, it was 13. 5 volts. Checked the tach signal with a digital voltmeter, had about 5 volts on DC scale and about 11 on AC scale. I'm going to assume that is the right signal. Bypassed the filter, tach still doesn't work. I have another tach, a 6000 max RPM one that they gave me when we were trying to get the thing working the first time, I'll try to hook that one up tomorrow night to see if it will work.

Thanks for helping me out, I sure hoped that was the problem!, Back to the drawing board.

Paccool, I think there is only one magnet on the balancer and I have a Isspro Tach. I don't recall anything between the tach and the sensor or the hot wire. I think I still have the instructions on installation. I will look them up and maybe I could e-mail them to you if you like. Mine has been installed for about 6 years. I did have a tach go bad but the sensor and magnet were not replaced. I sent it back to the mfg. and they determined that the tach. was defective.

Walt

Paccool, Today I looked up the instructions for my Isspro tach.

There are two magnets on the balancer. The only wiring for the tach is two wires from the sensor, a ground and a 12 volt switched lead. Works great.

Walt

ISSPRO Tach

Just put an ISSPRO tach in my 92 that is exactly as you describe. Connected to the factory wiring harness with the kit from ISSPRO. Tach works great. Got it from Geno's Garage with a set of instructions. Can email or fax tomorrow if you need the diagrams / instructions.

Dennis

Sorry to resurrect this thread from the dead, but Stan, are you still having problems with the Isspro?

I'd like to add a tach to my truck, and the plug-and-play aspect of the Isspro appeals to me, but our trucks are VERY similar, so I worry that I'll have similar problems. At $115 through DIS, the price is right.

Randii

Randii,

I install a 2" Isspro tach in my ;1992 W-250 about 2 months ago. I haven't had any problems with it. It hooked into the stock wiring harness just fine. I wouldn't be afraid of it. I sure hope Stan got his tach working. It is annoying when you put something in and Murphy makes sure it doesn't work.

Jeremy

Boy, you sure pulled this one up from a ways back!:)

No, I never did get the tach to work. I bought one of the "tiny Tachs" but have not had time to install. Its sitting along side the transmission temp gauge that has not been installed either!

Just seems like the last couple of months have been hectic and I've been on the go a lot.

Hope all you guys have better luck than I did with the stock wiring harness.
