Had my truck into the dealer said they couldn't duplicate the tach problem. Some one was blind. Makes me wonder if they even really checked it at all. I just got home from a 750 mile trip and it's even worse now! Guess I'll be taking it back soon.

i waited nearly 2 mothes for it to get bad enough. usally when i start it it shows 3-500 rpm so i showed them. i also shot a pic whith my blackberry to help prove it.

Does the tach influence anything else or is it just a display that is messed up.

I would think that the signal is ok since the engine seems to run normal and it is just the gauge cluster that is screwy. Please correct this observation if it is wrong.

Does anyone know if the above is correct?

I don't think it messes up anything else. It seemed that my transmission was shifting like it should, but I was pulling a trailer on some steep hills when I first noticed it. Since then, it's been ok (the transmission, not the tach).

My tachometer began it's nonsense almost two years ago. For what it's worth, I haven't had any other problems result from THAT particular issue. According to the gauge my truck now idles around 5-10rpm(not hundred or thousand) but it can just about break the right peg off in every gear(even when I'm just cruising around... ). It's actually become quite humorous to watch, and can make a great conversation piece when someone happens to notice it haha. Hopefully a solution of some sort will find it's way into this discussion!

On a seperate topic(hopefully?!?)- does anyone have any experience with the cruise control engaging/disengaging and accelerating/decel on it's own. I have no "control" over it at all! If I don't figure it out this week, I'm just going to bring it in, but I'd like to avoid that option... Even when I'm stopped and the truck is in neutral with the brake engaged the light on the dash comes on and off as it pleases(but that is it when stopped; the engine doesn't rev or anything... or atleast not enough that my "hearing tach" can notice... )

Any help or recommendations would be very much appreciated! If you would like to challenge your problem solving skills - Please PM me!

My '06 is acting the same. RPM's drop to about 300 at idle in gear. And occasionally I'll catch my tach fluctuating about 400 rpm (playing catch up) while cruising.
Any ideas on how to fix this or is the answer a new cluster?

The speedometer stopped working but the odometer continued to read correctly on my 2005 Chevy Silverado Parts Truck. I think that anybodys cluster nowadays contain stepper motors to run the needles and that is what is failing on tachs, speedos, etc. Sent it to my favorite tech and he has found a company that will repair the cluster in a day as a rule. It cost about 180. 00 for freight both ways and the actual repair. It was down for three days, 1 day UPS out, day to repair it, and another day on UPS to get it back.

I will ask him where he sent it if you guys want to know.

It may be the way to go for us that are out of warranty and don't want the expense and hassle of trying to get a replacement cluster from Dodge. I would prefer reusing what I had anyways.

From one of the above posts, it appears that three days will be blown waiting for Dodge to do the repair and I bet what I just did is a lot cheaper. Oo.

I am having similar concerns with the tach in my 06 mega with 6 speed. I am a little concerned as it is definitely more important to have a working tach in a manual transmission truck.

Sorry for the delayed correspondence guys... I FINALLY had this issue resolved with my truck. Unfortunately, it required me to have it serviced at the dealer. They replaced the gauge cluster(as it seems many others also had done). It very well could've been a loose connection, but I was unable to locate it if this was the case. Luckily I had 500 miles left under my extended warranty so it was all done at "no cost" to me... I also had a few additional pages of warranty work done(including a few recalls).

Hope this helps...

Just wondering if the trucks having the tach problems have similar build dates or whether this was a problem for the entire model year. Sure hope my truck, built in July 2005 doesn't develop this problem. However, with my luck it probably will.

They replaced the entire cluster, or just the tach?

It is my understanding that from 2003 to present the instrument cluster is part of the TCM and it is one big circuit board, they can't replace individual components which means a new cluster and programing

Rather than paying dealer mucho dinero for new cluster has anyone just used digital monitor like Bullydog Performance monitor to get by tach problem?

I had a problem with my tach at around 30k miles. It would operate eradicly at low RPM. Since the truck was under warenty they replaced the entire instrument cluster. I know have about 51k miles. No more problems yet.

What kind of mileage are you guys with the problem having? Mine is only used for towing the 5er and has relatively low mileage (57K). Just wondering when I need to start worrying about this issue.
