I am posting for a friend who does not have a computer. He is looking for a tach for his 91 truck. OEM is no longer available. Who makes a aftermarket one that will workl on this truck and a reasonable vendor. Also he wants to know if he needs to kill the dowel pin and if so is there a jig for it or would it be better to tab it.

Thanks

Bob

Is this a 91 or a 91. 5 model truck? If he has a intercooler it would be a 91. 5.

If he has a nonintercooled truck Auto meter makes one that runs off the alt circuit. I am not sure if anyone else makes one for the 91 and older trucks.

If he is a 91. 5 and newer. Auto Meter and Ipresso makes takes to fit the factory tach harness located under the dash on the left side of the steering column.

I would pull the cover and tab the bolt. Everyone that has pulled the cover has been finding loose bolts inside the cover. We have had two 1st gen members that have broken camshafts from cam retainer bolts coming out and falling into the gear train. :{

Phillip, or someone else, whats the part # for the autometer that hooks up to the harness? Also, can a diesel tach with the Alt. hook-up be converted to work off the crank sensor?

The 91. 5 truck does NOT have the factory tach harness. That started in 92. I installed an ISSPRO tach in mine. Installed a sensor and two magnets on the harmonic balancer (already has notches cut) and ran the wires. Easy evening job. Got everything I needed from PDR.

Autometer #2888

Fellas - the Autometer diesel tach is #2888. Works great in my rig, looks nice - got a pic or two in my readers rigs/diesel.

I put a Tiny Tach in my truck. All though it only updates once a sec, it is a nice unit and very simple to install. I think it was around $70. I would suggest having them make you one with a LED backlight though.

Thanks for all the replies. The truck is a 91 with no inter cooler. What is the part number for the Autometer gauge and where is a good place to get one?

Thanks

Bob

AUTO METER TACH

SamsRams,

Where did you purchase the Auto Meter tach? Did it plug into the factory harness?I have a '92 W250. By the way the crew cab looks pretty cool with the tilt frontend !! :D

the Autometer unit gets its signal from the alternator and it comes with the pick-up unit in the harness. You'll have to hand calibrate it using a small dial on the back of the tach. I went to a big rig shop and they had a hand-held portible tach. Plug it in, fire up the truck, read the hand-held tach, ans set the Autometer (or any other) tach to match. Works best at about 2000rpm.

Summit Racing is as good a place as any to get one, and they're usually in stock. I think it was under $50, and I mounted it right on the steering column offset from the speedo. Works great.

I've looked at the Alt Tach and the instructions show it installed around a grove ringed section on the alternator. My alternator doesn't look like that. Its two cast pieces put together. Would it still work O. K. if I placed it around the mid section?

Hey, maybe you guys can help me out with this one. I've got an Isspro tach mounted into my new dash that I fabbed for my coach. I have the engine harness and the ECM, but here's the kicker. I do NOT have any of the under dash wiring from the donor truck. I do have the 50-prong firewall plug, and I see in the manual that one of these prongs is marked "tachometer output". Which wire on the tach goes to this plug, and where would the other three wires hook up to?

TIA,

Don

my bad - yeah, the Autometer tach doesn't plug into the factory harness - you have to run the lead from the alternator, and then run the power/light hook-ups.

I'm going to talk with the Autometer guys and see if there is any way to do some kind of plug adaptor that will allow the factory flug to work. I have that factory harnes under my dash too, but I'd be happy to find a way to use it.

Sam,

Thanks for clearing that up. :D

I'm debating between the Isspro and the Auto Meter.

I was ready to purchase the Isspro tach before i read this thread, but now i'm  The Autometer would match my ultra lite boost & pyro.

Auto meter tachometer.

Greetings,

I installed the Autometer 2888 into my 92. I was able to use two of the the wires in the factory tach harness which was found above the e-brake pedal. I used the dash light and 12v ignition power wires in the factory harness. The factory tach signal wire (grey) would not work as it only provided one impulse per rev and, where this would make the tach work, it would not make it work within the range of adjustability. That is, it read between 300 and 1000 rpm when it should have read between 500 and 3000. Use the alternator magnetic pickup supplied with the tach to get a useful signal. I mounted the tach in front of the left dash vent using the upper left bezel screw hole and a longer screw. The wires are run through the vent and are barely visible.

The tach works good but does not work when the interior drops below 32 degrees. Once the cab warms up, the tach works fine.

ISSPRO tach for non-IC trucks

ISSPRO makes a kit to hook up the tach in the older trucks. Comes with the crank sensor and wiring. DIS has them, or they did a few months ago. Need to get it for the ISSPRO tach i have sitting in a box right now. Part #8912; goes for a little over $30, I believe.

ISSPRO TACH

According to my notes, the p/n for the tach is R8585M,and the harness kit to plug in under the dash is p/n R8912-92. Once again this is from my notes when i did a search about a year ago. :) These numbers were for a '92.

I could have been clearer, I guess

The 8912 was for the kit to hook up the tach in a truck w/o the under- dash plug in. That was stock #s from DIS, I believe. Need to double check, whichever route one goes. Kit included sensor and wiring, if I'm recalling correctly. I have a lot of useless info floating araound in my head- hard to recall which goes where sometimes.
