I have a 94 ford f700 with the 5. 9 cummins in it. Glad as hell to have this engine in it as i have owned several dodges and still have a 2006 dodge cummins. The tachometer does not work. Do the 12 valve engines have a cable drive tach or electronic? Any help greatly appreciated

The tach signal comes from the PCM (pin 43). The PCM needs a signal from the Engine Speed Sensor (front of engine over the harmonic balancer) for the tach to get a signal. (If the ESS is not working, you will see many other problems: no cruise control, no AC, no overdrive, no alternator charge, no torque converter lockup. )

This is how my 1995 Dodge works; your results on a Ford may differ.

In a 1994 F700 ford the tach sensor threads into the flywheel housing and is a 2 wire sensor which will go directly to the tach as it has no computer.

The Cummins balancer has two notches in it so it makes two pulses pre revolution. This means that if you connect that output directly to the tach in the Ford it will not read right. If, by some miracle you have the same number of teeth on the ring gear on the Ford as the Cummins then you can mount the Ford sensor on the bell housing. Probably have to drill and tap to get it right. You might want to contact FordCummins.com: Home and see what they have to say about it.

The cummins ballancer in a 94 F700 ford dose not have 2 notches, they run a different balancer than the dodge. It is a fluid dampner and is not part of the pulley like the dodge it consists of a seperate pulley, a spacer in front of the pulley followed by the dampner in front of that. The tach in the 94 F700 ford is run directly from a 2 wire sensor threaded into the the flywheel housing, and will not operate a dodge tach. Maybe I missunderstood but it appears to me that your working on a F700 not a dodge.

correct. I am working on a f700 and i really appreciate all the help you guys are giving me on this project. I am not sure but i think this may be a repowered truck as it has a lot of electrical plugs not used but everything but the tach works and is not a must have but i really would like it to work
