When I left the fuel station the other day, my tach was stuck @ 0 and wouldn't go anywhere. Of course, this made the "Check Engine" light come on and the tach will work most of the time, but usually under heavy acceleration, it drops down to 0 again. The truck runs fine 99. 9% of the time but twice, when I idle for 30 seconds or more it starts "romping" with a really hard idle that goes away if you give it a little fuel.

My point is... . Anybody know where the "sensor" or whatever is for the tach or know of anything else that I could check?

I pulled the codes and they are:

0500

0460

0219

0341

Could one of you guys with a service manual (which is now next on my list) tell me what these codes are for?

Wow, that is exactly what is going on with my truck also, tach goes to 0, but truck is still running, this has happened a couple of times. It seems like the engine stumbles once before it does this. I have not been able to pull any codes, cycled the key 3 times and nothing. How exactly does one get the codes, I have not had any luck? This is really starting to frustrate me. Any ideas?

0500 No vehicle speed sensor signal 0460Fuel level unit no change over miles 0219Crankshaft position sensor over speed signal 0341 Camshaft position sensor signal.

CPS...

Blkdawdg,

We have a customer with a 2000 Ram who had the same symptoms. Our initial feeling was the Crankshaft Position Sensor because the tachometer signal was dropping off like yours.

New CPS and around $40 later, his problems were solved.

Cummins Part Number: 4002066

Hope this helps...

Andy

Blkdawdg-Told you they would jump on this. I would replace the crankshaft position sensor. But that should be under warranty.

Camshaft position sensor! I popped mine pulling off the dealer lot with 7-miles on the odometer.

P. S. What year is the truck? It's either a Camshaft or Crankshaft sensor depending on the year.

Crankshaft position sensor

Lost my tachometer last Thursday!!:( Took it to the dealer on friday morning. They replaced the crankshaft sensor and cleared the codes. Took approximately 2 hrs to complete. I only have 24,000 miles on the truck.

Where is it?

Where is the CPS? I did a head gasket job two weeks ago and I'm hoping that it's just loose or something... . Let me know, please and thanks for everyones input.

Eric, the '01. 5s don't have a CPS. If you have a steel dipstick tube, you don't have a CPS. Your truck will only the camshaft sensor located under the VP44 on the back of the gear case. The reason for the plastic dipstick tube on the '98. 5-'00 was so that DC could snake it between the starter and the CPS.

Just because Cummins eliminated the CPS from the motor does not mean that DC took the OBD2 code for no engine speed. Crawl under your truck and look behind the starter next to the dipstick tube. On the '01s and up there is a cover plate where the CPS was mounted on the earlier trucks.

I believe that the camshaft position sensor is the same thing as the crankshaft position sensor--just mounted in a different location.

CPS

My CPS failed at approx. 20k miles with similar symptoms as above. The truck ran fine but the dash display was bizzare. I have an early 98. 5 24v.

DC replaced it under warranty and it has been trouble free, now at 88k miles.
