Hadn't driven the truck for about 10 days. . Got in to drive to store, looked down when underway and no tach reading. . Went to store and the carwash then on the drive home the tach was working. . !?! Anyone else see this happen?. . JohnG

Probably your crank position sensor. Sometimes they fail but sometimes the connectors get some crap in them and have poor contact. It's on the front of your engine close to your harmonic balancer. Pull the connector apart, clean out the connector and clean off the sensor itself with some electrical parts cleaner (the stuff in a spray bomb). Put it all back together and hopefully it'll work (mine did).

If this doesn't work the sensor may be toast or it could be something else. I see this problem frequently here so there are plenty of posts about this one.

Good Luck

Mike

i would buy it from cummins. they are around 30 bucks. You have to remove the starter to replace it. it takes about 1/2 an hour.

It's a '95. The pickup for the tach is on the front of the engine. It is held on with two screws on the gear case. If the connector is clean and it still doesn't work right it may need to be adjusted so the gap is correct.
