After The Oil Runs Out - Then What?

John,

I think we finally have an engine we could do an svo conversion on and throw it in an old car. Like a '58 desoto. Or even an old street rod which would be lighter. As a fullsize cummins would be too heavy. But I bet the hp/torque specs on that little engine would be similar to the old 325 cid polyhead, possibly better. That would around 240 hp/320 torque. But I think back then they ran the hp numbers unemcumbered. So it might be closer to 200. But that engine in a 32 Plymouth rod would certainly be sweet.

Just checked the specs... .....

Optional Engine: 160 hp, 295 lb-ft of torque, 2. 8-L, common-rail turbodiesel I-4.

You would need banks to get the hp/torque up for a full-size 50's car. But stock would be fine for a street rod.

Wife has her heart set on one. Dealer says they take delivery on Sept. of their first CRD. I'll probably wait for Edge or TST for power products though. Hopefully they will offer some good incentives or buys to get people into them so they will sell well. I have only found info on the US model with a 5 speed automatic transmission and we were really wanting a 5 speed manual like is offered overseas. I hear they will get 30 + mpg with the manual transmission on the other side of the pond.

Wow! Someone remembers that good ole car. Dad bought a '58 Desoto, was a great car. I thought it was the neatest thing to drive. Had the two speed manual/auto transmission. PUt 'er in low and go, let off the throttle, it would shift into "2nd" which I believe was a kind of OD unit?

Manually clutch/shift to "Drive" and go some more, let off the throttle and she would shift again.

I hadn't thought of that car in years.

I do believe that putting a 2. 8L diesel in that buggy would make for a nice street sleeper. Not to mention, it would have the neatest sound around. My tejano neighbors would just have open eyes for sure. :)

My wife wants one too! She's tired of paying more for fuel and getting worse milage than I do in my 3500 SRW. Hers is an 04 so we may need to wait a year and grab an 06 model.

Based on 2003 Automotive News, Small Sport Utility Segment, 2004 EPA Fuel Economy Guide and on preliminary 2005 Liberty EPA estimates of 21 mpg city and 27 mpg highway. Jeep, Liberty, Selec-Trac and Trail Rated are trademarks of DaimlerChrysler Corporation. CRD engine will not be available in California, Massachusetts, Maine, New York or Vermont. All product specifications are based on preliminary information and therefore are subject to change without notice.

Answers that question..... Wonder if you can BOMB it?

If it's like any of my other vehicles it will attain 30 mpg if it's rated at 27mpg. Check out some of the Australian websites on the Cherokee. I believe they have bombs for their models already. We are wanting a manual shift model for the mileage and longevity of it. I hear that engine has also been used in small tractors with good success.

"Times have changed and so has the technology to create a more-powerful, cleaner-running, quieter diesel engine"

Heh heh just wait til we get our mitts on theese things. I can see it now.
