tailgate for 5th-wheel

After only 2 days of having a 5th-wheel trailer I did the inevitable, I backed up about 1 inch too far with the tail gate up. Put a pretty good dent and even a small hole in the tailgate. That has now speeded up my search for a 5th-wheel tailgate, one of those that has sort of a V-shape.



I know that there are several manufacturers of these tailgates. I would imagine some have features that make them better than other brands.

Any suggestions?

By the way, since I put that ding in my tailgate I've been looking at other trucks with a 5th-wheel hitch AND the factory tailgate. Darned near every one has a similar ding. Doesn't make me feel so bad.

Handy Industries make a good one out of steel. This gate is well made and comes flat black. The one on my last truck held up well and I put one on the new truck as soon as I bought it. Painted it body color and am very happy with it. I bought an extra set of plastic bushing from my DC dealer so I wouldn't need to switch them from the factory gate. Check my pics in readers rigs. Handy tailgates

Glenn, I also have a tailgate made by Handy, they are a good quality item that fit well and are very durable. This is my third truck owned that I bought one for and have not been disappointed. Once painted to match the truck, they look great.



As for you guys that don't have one yet, I wish you nothing but the best and no ill will. But there are two types of 5er owners in the world, those who have crunched the tailgate (me) and those who are going to someday. I can tell you from personal experience that when the your time comes and you forget to open the gate, your buddies will be standing there to watch you bend the crap out of it. They won't let you forget about it!

I thought I was impurvious to hitting the tail gate. Well, I was rushed one day hooking up, and DID put the tail gate down. But, after servicing the trailer the dealer put it in a corner and I had to pick it up at 45 degrees or more. With the gate down, the corner of the gate had just enough reach to punch a hole in the generator access door. Just a little hole, but boy did I feel stupid. I now have 2 reflectors mounted on the access door to make them symetrical like they were meant to be there!!!



After that, I bought a proper 5th wheel gate from

Great prices but it was very heavy steel. My present truck has a plastic gate that is much easier to mount and dis-mount. If you are going to change back and forth, get plastic.

The diamond-plate box across the rear is only used for LOOOoong RV trips when I need to take extra tools and stuff along - otherwise, it is out, and only the knotty pine panel remains...

I also have the Handy and agree that it's well made and fits very well. Comsiderably higher quality then the Customflow (from Camping World) tailgate I had on my 2001 (I still have this one and will sell it cheap!).
