hey all- new here. ( just figured out how to change my oil/filter and do my front brakes - yeah THAT kinda brand new... so be gentle!)

Im looking at getting a cap for my 96 2500 , and does anyone know if its possible ( simple) to replace the latch mechanism on my tailgate with a locking one?

thanks for any help!

Jim

I install one call Pop-n-Lock (I believe), which I purchased at my Dodge dealer for the same price as eBay. Other and better brands are available for more $$$. In addition I installed a hose clamp on the Passenger side pin hinge. Remember, anything you do to secure your tailgate will only slow down or discourage the would be thief.

I have a bully tailgate lock on mine. You replace the bezel around the handle with one that has a lock. I think it'll keep honest people out and slow doen a crook a bit but it's far from fool proof. Best way is to use stainless steel barrel bolts on the inside of the tailgate. Someday I'll look to see if I can put the handle on the inside of the tailgate and weld up the hole on the outside. I've seen this done on old chebbys but I'm not sure if it can be done on ours.

I have a pop-lock as well. Works real nice. it locks and unlocks with the driver door lock or remote and it keeps it looking stock. I think it was $80 and about 1. 5 hours to install. Most of the time was due to routing the wire from the cab to the tailgate. it was a simple install.

Mine's a Boss Lock electric one that activates with the power door locks. Pretty slick. Simple install.

I see generic door lock solenoids for sale on ebay real cheap and, if I ever get the time, would like to hook one of those up to the topper latch to work the same way. It would be easy to do. Everything would be locked or unlocked at the touch of one button or with the alarm remote.

I recently bought a used Lund Racerback and will need to surrender my topper and go with a tonneau (or nothing at all) once it is painted and installed. Remove ten screws and it will come off and allow for topper use again, though. I had one on my Chevy years ago and they look cool imo. Good place to mount some lights, too.

Of course, the topper has been green since I bought it six or seven years ago and my truck is maroon... Yup, I'm a redneck fashion statement on wheels! I only use it for hunting season to keep the dog warmer or on trips where we have luggage in the back. I see another guy running around town occassionally who has a green truck with a maroon topper... We need to stop 'n swap!

If you remove your tailgate to work on it, don't lose the little plastic bushings on the hinge posts or you will have rapid hinge post wear and terrible rattling.
