Looking through a parts catalog, I see a couple of different manufacturers make an electric solenoid operated lock for tailgates (works with power door locks). One looked like a good deadbolt design, the other looked like it latched into a smaller hoop.

What experiences do you have with them? Is there a good one to buy for quality, durability, installation, and security?

Thanks

tailgate lock alternative

If all you are after is security (not having your tailgate stolen), Genos Garage used to have an item that simply fastened over the right side hinge/pivot that prevents the tailgate from being removed. I have not seen it in their advertisements lately, but they may still offer it. It was quite inexpensive, as I remember.

Another idea, anyway.

I'm going to buy a Roll-N=Lock tonneau cover which can lock closed, without latching to the tailgate. Then I could just drop the tailgate to access. But then, I need a way to lock the tailgate closed.

I, too, have the Pace Edwards like mcandies, and it works fine. However, if you pop the cover off around the latch handle, which you can do with a screw driver, and reach in there with said screw driver, you can move the deadbolt aside and open the gate.

So it's a deterrent, but not a big one.

I got one from JC Whitney. About $60. 00. You take the tailgate latch out and mount it inside. Works with existing power locks and have had no problems. Hope this helps.

Just take a hose clamp and put it around the right hinge. It take a whole lot longer for some one steal the tail gate. Moet theives won't take the time.
