Hello all,

Due to work, My brand new 1999 2500 QC SB 6spd will have to spend some long layovers in the airport parking garage. I thought I would try and make it a little less attractive target for thieves.

1. Does anyone know of a good tailgate lock?
2. Will the Mopar Performance locking gas cap work with diesels?
3. Finally, any recommendations on the wheel locks - I was going to go with the Mopar Perf. 2 piece - retails for about $28 here.

Thanks - I would hate to come back from a trip and find the truck with no gas, no tires, and no tailgate!!!

-Vic

You can just take the tailgate off and leave it at home.

I concur with Joe G on the tailgate. I do have the Mopar gas cap lock ($10) and the spare tire lock ($28) on my truck mainly for short piece of mind periods while the truck is parked in public areas.
I also traveled on extended periods when I was employed (now retired) but I would never leave the truck at the airport - secured parking lot or not! There are just too many creeps walking the streets and too many stories about those "midnight auto parts" opportunities.
When confronted with that dilemma, I either asked my spouse to take me to the airport, shuttle, or take a cab in that order of priority. My philosophy, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". I also slept better knowing the prized beast was at home safe and sound and directed my focus and attention instead to the business on hand.

Vic, for the tailgate there are a few products I'm aware of. The pop-n-lock is pretty secure, but a bit of a pain if you open the tailgate often. You have to use a key to open it. (Most truck accessory houses have/can get those. ) Then there is the Tailsafe System. It used to be advertised in Geno's but I haven't seen it lately. It's less expensive than the pop-n-lock - just a metal piece that fits over the cam where the tailgate normally is removed. (It must be removed to get the tailgate off, and a special tool (supplied) is required. ) I have one on my Ram now, and feel pretty confident that I'll find my tailgate still attached when I get off work each day. Then there's the electric version of a tailgate release I've read about in past forum threads. You might try the search engine - probably come up with more options than I remmeber.

I also have a Mopar locking fuel cap. You can get those through DC parts. I have mine mostly to keep foreign substances out (sabotage) than to stop thieves.

I also have the spare tire lock and the wheel locks, plus a few other security features. Cops can be pretty paranoid when it comes to stuff like this...

But I'll go one further to agree totally with the previous post - leave the Beast at home whenever possible. Good luck!

Traders Truck Accessories (a mail order co. in Calif. ) carries the "Bosslock" power tailgate lock that ties into the power door locks. I have one on my truck and it works great. Traders has a website, but I don't know the URL. They advertise in Truckin' magazine, maybe someone else can post their toll free number.
I have to park in an airport (employees only) lot every night at work. I'm more paranoid about some moron parking next to me and putting a door ding in my truck, or someone hitting it, than I am of someone stealing it. I always park "out in the boonies" at every parking lot I go to.

Vic:
I replaced the right hinge of my tailgate (the one with the slot cutout for removal) with a left hinge. The left hinge is almost a perfect flop of the right hinge. I had to do some minor tweaking - need a vise and channel locks to bend slightly for perfect fit. I purchased a left hinge from Dodge but never thought of it till now - wonder if just switching hinges would work?
The only way the tailgate can be removed is with a wrench to remove the bolts with this setup.
Perhaps the only sure guarantee to avoid tailgate theft is to remove it as mentioned earlier. A pain but no worry.
In any case, good luck

I've heard tell that car/parts thieves often have all the 'keys' for locking lug nuts, so their usefulness may be somewhat limited. You *night* be better off running a chain or cable through the tire and locking the tire to some part of the chassis or suspension. You would likely want to take care as to *where* you route the chain/cable, to avoid incidental damage to brake lines, springs, shocks and such.

Wow, now I know where to find a 6 speed transmission, hehehehe. #ad
Lucky for you its too heavy to steal, or it might be a prime target. They would probably take the whole truck, even worse bummer.

Seriously, you might put a 5 speed knob on the shifter. A simple worm drive hose clamp painted body color will definitely slow down the tailgate thieves--warp it around the slotted pivot.

Bolt a chain to the H cross member above the spare tire and run it down to a lug hole, padlock the tire.

You need kill switches, simple ones are OK, the better you hide them, the better they work.

I got locking fuel caps at Kmart,I think they were Stant.

Good luck.
Joe

C'mon guys this is a gadget website. Push the electric locks. I have one on my 98' it's great no problems at all. Took a couple hours to install, most of that was running wires and finding the place to splice. You can't beat it for an open truck. Bought it from JC Whitney its a Boss Industries DR400.
Once installed it works with remote and power door locks, nice. Doors unlocked, tail unlocked. Doors locked tail locked. If you forget to close tail and lock doors, well just close the tail it's already locked. IMHO you'd better have an alarm system too, because if somebody wants it bad enough the lock only slows them down.

If you install an alarm as Road Dog says, make sure it's not too sensitive. The parking lot where I park at the airport is almost right under the flight line. Many times when a plane is landing or taking off, they set off car alarms. It's kind of funny to hear some guy's car alarm constantly going off every time a plane flies overhead, almost like the car was a dog barking at each plane. I often wonder if he has had dead batteries because the alarm is set too sensitive. Something to think about if the parking lot is under the flight path.
Andy

If you have any of the better security systems (even the EVS II) you can disable the shock sensor while leaving the rest of the alarm active. This is a must at the airport or as you say it will be going off constantly.

Has anyone had any practicle experience with the Pop & Lock tailgate lock (not the new power version)? I was wondering whether the cover assembly is removed to open the tailgate or if the key somehow disengages the latch mechanism. I have never run into anyone who has used this (other than Scott, who I forgot to ask for an explanation and demo. ). Just wondering...

I know your truck is a '99, but for the benefit of members who own a 2000 model, you should know that the fuel cap is different for that year. A cap from 1999 and earlier will not fit the 2000 model. I had to get my locking cap at the dealer.

John,
The Pop N Lock requires that you remove the plastic trim around the tailgate handle. It will easily pop out with the careful use of a screwdriver. The Pop N Lock, replaces that, and completely covers the handle, so you can't open the tailgate without first removing the cover. which is key locked in place. Hope that explains it.

MCrossley, just check with your local accessories shop. I would imagine there are quite a few in your area. Hit the yellow pages and ask if they have one. I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find one in ten minutes.

But back to your question (sorry, I get carried away), no, I'm afraid I don't know a web site for Pop-N-Lock.

Thanks Tulsa, finding one is not a problem, just wanting to look at this rumored electric version.
