Anyone use a tailgate step on their truck, wondering how you like it. I already know being that I'm about 5'3", getting into the bed of my 2500 (on order) is going to be a little tough.

I've got one made by Steelhorse that I got at K-mart when they were going out of business for about $5. Its kind of cheezy, but it works better then I thought it would. ONly bad part is I had to drill 4 holes in the tailgate of the 97 to mount it. I think the regular price was 30 and you could make one cheaper I would think. Let me know if you want a picture of it and I'll post one tomorrow when its daylight.

I'm 6'6'' but I don't think it matters, When I get in the bed of my truck I go to either side of the truck and step on the tread of the rear tire and grab the bedrail and step up and swing a leg over said bedrail and I'm in.

Try this you might like it and then you won't have to mess with your tailgate. :D

I am 5'5" and tried that once with my duallie, others thought it was quite a spectacle:eek: . ;) .

I use a milk crate, it is a fine multipurpose tool.

I have a top on back so this may or may not be for you. when traveling, (keep suit cases etc locked in box), I carry a small 3 step step ladder, does not take up much space and can set it up in about 10 seconds. makes getting in an out a real breeze. just to much work climbing in and out of that tall rear!!Oo.

Mine is made by Werner, $29 at Lowes.

2" stepladder;) It lives in the bed of my 4wd. I use it to get up into the bed and when I'm working under the hood.

If you have a trailer hitch why not just step on the ball?

I have a 3" drop hitch and it makes a perfect step, also great for stupid people in traffic jams, it leaves their radiators on the hitch not your bumper.

I think StelHorse makes a "swing-a-way" that mounts to the spring bolt. Just another thought, as we have one on the SO's 4x4.

I don't like to drive around with my hitch on. I did that for about a year with my Dakota and now so much crap and rust built up in the tube that it's a pain to get the hitch head in and out any more and I've scraped and cleaned inside the tube and the hitch the best I could.

Also I think it's worse to get into an accident with a hitch head on. My thought it if you get rearended hard, they hit the head first which transfers all of the impat right to the frame instead of letting the bumper do it's job. and absord the impact.

As promised, here is the picture of the one on my 97. Sorry its so late - a huge project came up at work.

Anyway, it does make getting into the back of the 97 a lot easier.

It might be a little hard to see in this picutre, but the step flips up on 2 90 degree brackets and lays flat against the tailgate when its closed.

By the way, don't be dumb like I was and put it in the middle of the tailgate - makes it hard to load large heavy stuff. Its on the to-do list to move it to one side.
