When I closed the tailgate on my 1999 Ram 2500 yesterday, it failed to latch shut. Naturally it dropped and when it did, both straps snapped in half. Any one else had this problem? The dealer wants $28. 50 each!!! Any place to get replacements at a reasonable price? All the wrecking yards around me (Washington state) won't part out the tailgate.

Wow, my dealer charged me about $16 a piece for mine. On the replacements, I cut the plastic sheath off where the cable bends so the water can drain out. The trapped water in teh sheath i what the problems are on these cables. My 95 Chevy was the same way. Cut the sheath off of the chevy cables, and they are still great 9 years later.

Yes, it happens. The cables corrode and eventually break. Ask at some of the auto parts stores. I can't remember which one it is but I know some of them carry replacement straps for Dodges. It would have to be either NAPA, Autozone, Parts Plus, or Auto Value because those are pretty much the ones I go to around here.
