The support cable on my tailgate (dr. side) broke today, rusted  . are these the same size on all 2nd Gen. trucks, try to find one at the yard.

I wouldn't bother going to the yard and looking for one... You can pick them up at Napa or other parts stores for about $10 each. . Your better off with one of these rather than digging through the yard and having another just break on ya later. . But I would go ahead and buy 2 rather than one. . When mine broke on my 02 1 broke replaced it then shortly after that the other one broke... Buy 2 new ones and keep the other for a spare... ;)

Same part numbers 1994-2002.

As others have said, buy new. They may look okay on the outside...

The real deal is about $17 each.

Just a tid bit of info for ya. . If you ever get into a situation that you need to buy cummins engine parts. . Injector o-rings, washers, valve cover gaskets, etc. . (for example) try a local big truck dealer (like a Freightliner dealer for example if it's available in your area) that deals with cummins parts. . Sometimes you can get engine parts through them alot cheaper than if you go through a dodge dealer. . The parts come straight from cummins only difference is one has a cummins part # the other has a Mopar part #... I priced a set of injector o-rings from my dealer and they wanted almost $7 a piece for them. . Went through a cummins dealer (freightliner dealer) and bought them for under a dollar a piece. . I bought 6 inj. o-rings and 6 sealing washers for $13. That beat the heck out of the $40 couple dollars the dealer wanted for them. . Sometimes all they need is the engine size and engine serial # and they should be able to hook you right up with just about any engine part you need... Oo.

Or check with a tractor/implement dealer. Case, among others, uses Cummins engines & has parts- generally cheaper than Dodge.

Something else you can do when you get your new cables is soak them for a day or two in metal protector / WD40 or the like. And / Or seal the ends with silicone so no water gets inside the plastic and sits down where it bends. I did this when mine broke 2 years ago. -Jason

Notice that the parts are Left and Right. The cables are different lengths and not interchangable. Brilliant idea? I don't think so.

I made a set out of some coated cable for my V-gate. Cheesy. Buy a new set with the correct clips, you'll be happier.

HUH!??

My 96 and 01 both take the same cables and they are both the same for left and right.

Maybe one of yours stretched before it broke...

I just got 2 more today $14. 88 each at Advance Auto. The price went up since the last time I got them.

WD40 is not a good idea. It's a Water Displacement formula that evaporates. Use something like LPS #3. That stuff soaks in and stays on the metal.

The same cables were used model years 1994-2002. Unless you have a unique truck:rolleyes: , the two OEM cables are mirror images, a right and a left hand.

I saw the topic and my first thought was "oh no, not on Dodges too"

If you have owned a late model GM pickup, you know what I mean. For some reason, the General cannot build a tailgate that stays together. Cables, latch mechanism and especially the release handle trim piece. I learned to keep my hand on the tailgate after closing it because several times I would close it and it wouldn't latch but it would fall back down and twice it broke both cables. Same thing happened 3 times to a friend.

Next time you are at a light behind a newer GM pickup- see if the handle trim piece looks crooked (some of the mounting tabs broken) or missing (ALL of the tabs broken. That P. O. C. plastic part cost me $35.

That part of my GMC I do not miss.
